Welcome to Arnold!  My name is Mr. Abrahamson (Mr. "A") and I will be your Social Studies (World Civilizations) teacher this year.  You can come to this site to review what we are covering in class.  I try to update information weekly.  However, due to various reasons, it may not always be changed each week.  Assignment dates may vary due to our block schedule.  If you have any questions you can always e-mail me at wabrahamson@mcsdga.net.

This week we will review the MCSD handbook.  Students will receive a study guide for the handbook.  A test will be given over the handbook on Friday for "A" day and on Monday 8/17 for "B" day.

We will also work on map skills this week.  This includes locating key items on a map.  If time allows we will also begin to discuss locating places using latitude and longitude.

This week we discuss some geographical terms.  Students were given a handout with the words and their definitions.  Our next quiz will cover some of these words.  We also began our lesson on Latin America.  Students will keep a portfolio on Latin America in the classroom.  If they do not finish work during class time, they should finish it at home and return it to their portfolios.  This weeks portfolio entry was a political and physical map of Latin America.  The maps should be labeled and colored.

Our next quiz is scheduled for (A day Friday 8/28)
                               (B day Monday 8/31)

It will be over the georgraphy of Latin America and some of the geographic terms.

9/8 - 9/11

This past week we studied about the Inca Empire and the Caribbean Islands.  Students were also introduced to the Social Studies or Social Science Fair project.
All students will be required to complete a Social Studies Fair research paper and a visual aid to go along with the paper.  For magnet students, the visual aid must be a tri - board.  Students might also consider including some type of model to go along with the project.  For traditional students, the visual aid might be a poster or a model.

Students that are wanting their projects to be considered for placement in the school-wide fair might want to look at the web site gcss.net for ideas.

Projects will not be due until sometime in November.

9/14 - 9/18

On Monday and Tuesday, students will finish their notes on the Caribbean and they will also review for an upcoming quiz on the Inca and the Caribbean.

"A" day quiz on Wednesday 9/15.
"B" day quiz on Thursday 9/16.

9/28 - 10/2

This week we discussed the country of Brazil and the importance of the rain forest.  We have also been celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by learning about famous people like Roberto Clemente, Desi Arnaz, and Jennifer Lopez.
Students will have a quiz on South America Geography, The Guianas, and Brazil next week.  We had a Bingo review during class.  If they can answer the questions asked during the game, they will do fine on the quiz.
Students should also continue their research for their Social Studies Fair project.  I have us signed up to go the computer lab later this month, but much of the work needs to be completed outside of class.  Please see me or e-mail me if you have any questions about the project.  A good site to visit is gcss.net.  Click on Georgia Social Studies Fair and follow the links.  Traditional students do not need to do the tri-board.  They can have a poster or some type of model with the paper.  Projects will be due the first part of December.

10/19 - 10/22

This week's classes were shorten due to giving the CoGat Standardize Test.
During Social Studies we went to the computer lab to work on Social Studies Fair Projects. Although we managed to do a lot of research, students will probably need to do more at home or a the Columbus Public Library.  I will give out a rubric next week to show how the paper needs to be organized.
Next week we will continue with unit on Canada.
