Performance Objectives(s):
Students will be able to identify the 7 continents and 4 major oceans. Students will also become familiar with reading a map, including coordinates, directions, and a compass rose. Students will also identify the 4 hemispheres and various geographical vocabulary terms.

Lesson Content:

Warm Up: The first 5 minutes of class will be spent watching FOX News, CNN, or looking at the news headlines on Google. The following 5 minutes will be spent discussing the news story.

All portions of the study guide will be preceded by teacher lecture and class discussion.

Study Guide 1: A Geographer’s World
Answer each question on a separate sheet of paper. Write in complete sentences when possible. Each answer counts as an individual grade. Be neat and use a pencil.

1.    Label and color the following on your world map: North America, South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, Antarctica,Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, & the Arctic Ocean

2.    Read the “What is a Map” book and answer the 6 questions at the end of the book.

3.    Complete the “Grid Coordinates” map and the “Directions” map.

4.    Draw an example of each hemisphere and complete the “Compass Rose" worksheet

5.    Define the following terms:

a.    Perspective
b.    Spatial perspective
c.    Geography
d.    Urban
e.    Rural
f.    Absolute location
g.    Relative location
h.    Place
i.    Region
j.    Movement
k.    Human-environment interaction
l.    Human geography
m.    Physical geography
n.    Cartography
o.    Meteorology
p.    Climatology

Assessment:
On Friday: Complete the Chapter 1 test. This test will be open book and you can work together. The completed Study Guide will be taken up on Friday. Each section of the guide counts as an individual grade.

TV

Differentiation/Modifications:
More time, if needed, on assignments and tests
No penalty for spelling errors
Peer tutoring when appropriate

Students will be able to identify meanings of words by examining the context and structure. Students will identify the difference between a sentence and a fragment. Students will be able to identify subjects, predicates, compound subjects, and compound verbs in a sentence. Students will also read out-loud and actively listen.

*Vocabulary lesson 1 plus 10 vocabulary/spelling words
*Grammar lesson 1 – parts of the sentence
*Literature – “Just Once”, read and discuss
*Reading & Listening: “Because of Winn-Dixie”
*Online practice – “Grammar Girls” and other games

Spelling/Vocabulary test on Friday
