Homework:
Spelling and AR
We are back in full swing now. The CRCT has come and gone. Thanks goodness!!!! We have 3 more people that have not gotten his/her balloon walk and those children need to read and test at least 3 books a day. The other children are still required to pass 2 AR tests a week. Those that have had a balloon walk will also be allowed to check out non AR books. These are for enjoyment purposes only.

Spelling will resume as usual. Practice test today and final test on Friday.

Thanks for the treats for CRCT Week!

Spelling test update:
Please be aware that all of the children will now be responsible for 10 spelling words. If they do not miss 10 words then they will only be responsible for the words they miss. But it will not be more than 10. Grades will no longer be on a 10 point scale. The grade will be determined by how many words they originally missed and how many of those they got right. Please have your child study his/her spelling words every night.

Many of you have asked for a writing website and here are 2 good ones:

First and Second Grade AR: The children are required to read and pass at least 2 AR tests per week. Now that the year is almost half over, it is time for you, as parents, grandparents, etc, to stop reading your child’s AR book to him/her. You may help with troubled words but it is important that he/she sounds the words out or identifies which word makes sense. Please allow him/her to read to you but please refrain from reading to them. You may read non-AR books to them for their reading log. Please make sure the AR books come to school everyday, even if you have not had time to read it at home.

FYI: Some of our children have reached the 1.0 or higher level in AR. While we are very pleased at this achievement, we are finding out that many of them cannot actually read the book without minimal assistance. Please stop reading the AR books to your child if he/she has reached the 1.0 level. Please have your child read the book to you. They should be able to sound out the unknown words. If they do not know but one or two words on a page, and it takes longer than you counting to 10 for them to read the page, the book is too hard. I have already put some of the children back on a lower level because they did not meet these guidelines.  I want all of my children reading on his/her grade level but that is what they have to do on his/her own in order for him/her to be a successful reader.

Reading Log: Reading logs are part of the homework. Please make sure you turn them in with the homework folder. Your child is responsible for reading each night that is listed even if we do not come to school that day. Your child can either read to you or may read to him/her at least fifteen minutes per night. This does not have to be an AR book but the AR book must be read each night.

Math- I sent a Math Packet home with your child. Please keep this at home to use with your child when he/she is having difficulty.
I also sent home an addition sheet with 50 addition facts. Please keep this at home and use it to make flash cards or worksheets to help your child learn these facts. Your child (1st & 2nd grade) must be able to take a test with these facts within 5 minutes. We will start the 10 minute timed test in November and then the 5 minute tests in January.

I let the children bring a water bottle to class to drink out of. They keep them at their desks. They are to bring a new bottle each Monday and we will send the old bottle home on Friday to either be washed out or replaced. These can only be water bottle and water. No juice boxes, jugs, or Kool Aid.

If you would like to donate any treats for the treat jar we would appreciate it. Also, if you would like to donate water bottles of drinks for afternoon, we have 13 children in our class.

Please refer to www.schoolnotes.com for any updates during the week. Sometimes I remember things or something is changed during the week and it is easier to type it in schoolnotes.

Homework: Return folder and homework on Fridays

1.    Please make sure your child reads his/her AR book each night. Please ask him/her questions about the story to make sure he/she is ready to take the test on the book. Remember each child must take and pass at least 2 AR tests per week. If your child is reading on a 1.0 or higher, please let your child read the books to you instead of you reading to them. At this level they should be able to read on their own. They may still need assistance with some words but they should be able to use reading strategies to solve unknown words. I have sent home a reading log. Your child needs to read at least 15 minutes per night. Please fill out the reading log each day. You child will receive 10 points per day for a total of 40 points for the week. Your child is responsible for each day even if we are out of school for a day during the week such as holidays, teacher planning days, etc. These books do not have to be AR books.

Weekly folders:
Weekly folders contain the work that your child has completed during the week. Please go over these papers and notice any notes that are written on them. Please help at home with things that need extra assistance. Also, please note how many pages were turned in late or incomplete. Please discuss the importance of completing work on time. These folders are sent home on Fridays and must be returned on Monday. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO SIGN THE WEEKLY REPORT AND RETURN IT WITH THE FOLDER.
