We have decided that it takes so long for most students to copy the word of the day and the mugshot that the students will have this task modified to suit their individual needs.
Some students will receive a copy of the WOD and the mugshots to correct. Others will still copy from the board and correct.
Monday Sept.22-first day of Fall
We started a project on writing. We are using the story we read by O. Henry called The Ransom of Red Chief. They are writing two letters on card stock as if it were a postcard. The first card is from Johnny Dorset, the child who was the main character in the story. He is writing to Bill and Sam in Canada where they have gone to get away from Johnny. He is telling them the kind of things a boy like Johnny would want them to know. The second card is their response to Johnny. The cards should use ironic humor.
Rubric for postcard project.
If you want an:
A-3 paragraphs, correct conventions, 3 references to the story, 2 references to Canada
B-2 paragraphs, 5-9 mistakes, 2 references to the story, 1 reference to Canada
C-1 paragraph, 10-14 mistakes, 1 reference to the story, no reference to Canada
F-not a complete paragraph, no references to the story or to Canada, more than 15 mistakes.
Part of their grade also comes from the required preplanning. Since we are requiring three paragraphs, they must have three titles/topics that their paragraphs will address.
For instance:
1. miss you
2. enjoyed the camp out
3. see you soon when I come visit you in Canada
For each paragraph, we made a graphic organizer in the form of a sunshine. In the center of the sun is the topic and there are five rays extending out that should have one idea a piece on them. The number one ray is the topic sentence for that paragraph and should basically state the topic of that paragraph. The other four rays should have one or two word ideas that support the topic. These ideas will make up the remaining sentences in the paragraph. (paragraphs must have five sentences, sentences must have 5-7 words) Repeat for each paragraph. This planning is essential for the 8th grade writing test.
This rubric applies to both cards. We have gone over this in class and it is posted in class. They can use the computers, ask me for help, and use their books. They were also given permission to buddy up to help each other.
GA Studies
Friday-September 19 we continued work on the 5 geographic region poster. They are allowed to print from the internet, cut up magazines, and use their book for ideas.
Tues- September 23-
Using overhead each student will trace a large outline of GA onto a piece of posterboard both front and back. They will use this for their mini-project.
update: some students did not feel confident to trace their own outline so others volunteered.
Thur-September 25
Posters are ready and students should begin gluing on their pictures in the appropriate region. Pages 9-19 in the Georgia Studies book tell about each region and have some representative pictures to help if you have magazines at home they can cut up to get more pictures. We are going for geographic region pictures, so they should show land formations, not people or jobs or buildings. We will do another project on the economic activities that take place in each region and that is when we will need pictures of the different businesses that make up Georgia's economy. So start looking for those pictures also and save them for later.
In both of my classes this week, we will conference about grades and progress. Report cards are issued on October 10th.
