MOON NOTES
The Moon is about 2,160 miles around, which is about 1/4 the size of Earth.
The gravity on the Moon is about 1/6 that of Earth
**To figure out weight on the Moon divide the weight by 6
The surface temperature rises to 212° F and falls to -247°F
The Moon has no water and no atmosphere
The surface of the Moon is covered with mountains, valleys, and craters. These features can be seen from Earth
The Moon revolves around the Earth
As it moves around the Earth we see different phases of the Moon
Reason for the Phases- The Sun illuminates one side. This causes us to see the different phases
*illuminate- to light up*
Phases
We see 8 phases of the Moon as it revolves around the Earth
Full- The entire illuminated side of the Moon faces Earth
New- The illuminated side of the Moon is facing away from Earth
Quarter- Half of the illuminated side is facing Earth
Crescent- Less than half of the illuminated side is facing Earth
Gibbous- More than half of the illuminated side is facing Earth
Waxing- Growing Moon
Waning- Shrinking Moon
