STUDYING THE OCEAN FLOOR NOTES
Because the ocean is so deep, scientists must figure out a way to study it without being crushed by pressure
SONAR Accomplishes this difficult task
Sonar studies the underwater geological features of the oceanic basin
It is a way of measuring the depth of the ocean
SONAR stands for
SOund
Navigation
And
Ranging
How it Works:
Ships use a speaker to send out a sound wave called a ping. The ping travels down until it hits the ocean floor. Once the ping hits the ocean floor it bounces back up to the ship. **The time it takes for the ping to return to the ship helps scientists figure out the dept of that part of the ocean
OCEAN FLOOR NOTES
Oceanography
The study of EarthÃÂs oceans
Oceanography is also the study of the ocean floor, or the oceanic basin
Oceanic Basin- Underwater geological features, or underwater landforms
Anywhere on Earth covered by water or below sea level
Land extends from the end of a continent under water
Continental Shelf- The gradually sloping end of a continent that extends under the water
Continental Slope- The steep drop from the edge of the continental shelf
Continental Rise- The small incline from the end of the continental slope
Seamount- A mountain extending from the seafloor that does not reach the waterÃÂs surface
Island- A mountain extending from the seafloor that reaches the waterÃÂs surface
Seamounts can be volcanic
Over time these volcanic seamounts become larger and larger until eventually they reach the waterÃÂs surface
When this occurs they have become volcanic islands
Trench- A narrow depression in the seafloor. These are the deepest parts of the ocean
Inside the Mariana Trench is the deepest point in the EarthÃÂs crust
Abyssal Plain- A flat or gradually sloping area of the deep oceanic basin
Mid-Ocean Ridge- Underwater mountain ranges

Science Fair Project information was passed out Thursday and Friday. Please go over the information and return the signed parent letter by next week. Begin thinking of a topic that would be good for your project.
SWOD
(Science Word of the Day)
Students are given 2 SWOD a day and are to keep up with them. Once we have reached 10 words we will have a SWOD Quiz.
1. Reef- Rigid, waveresistant, ocean margin habitat built by corals from skeletal material and calcium
2. Reflecting telescope- Optical telescope that uses a double concave mirror to focus light and form an image at the focal point
3. Refracting telescope- Optical telescope that uses a double convex lens to bend light and form an image at the focal point
4. Relative Dating- Dating technique which states that layers get older the further downward and more recent the further upward
5. Renewable resources- Relating to or being a commodity or resource, such as solar energy or firewood that is inexhaustible or replaceable by new growth
6. Revolution- Orbiting of one heavenly body around another
Make sure you are keeping up with all of your assignments!
