EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE NOTES
The atmosphere is a layer of gases surrounding Earth that is held in place by Earth’s gravity
Why do we need an atmosphere?
The atmosphere protects the Earth by keeping out the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays
It helps keep temperatures even
The atmosphere keeps the Earth’s water circulating so we never run out
There is no definite end to the layers of the atmosphere, the simply become thinner and fade away
Troposphere
-The lowest layer of the atmosphere
-The layer in which we live
-Where weather takes place
-Where planes travel
Stratosphere
-The second layer of the atmosphere
-Holds the ozone layer which protects Earth from harmful Sun rays
-Because the layer traps the Sun’s rays, it is very hot
Mesosphere
-Third layer of the atmosphere
-Most poorly understood layer
-Meteors vaporize in this layer
-Too high for airplanes, too low for space craft
Thermosphere
-Fourth layer of the atmosphere
-Thickest layer of the atmosphere
-Northern Lights occur here
-Shuttle orbits in this layer
Exosphere
-Fifth layer of the atmosphere
-Uppermost layer of the Earth’s atmosphere
-Layer fades into space
-Beyond this layer is outer space
