Dear Students and Families,

Welcome to 5th grade.  I’m excited about the opportunity to get to know you, and I’m looking forward to a happy and productive school year.

Curriculum areas we will focus on this year include: reading comprehension, various aspects of multiplication, division, decimals, fractions, geometric measurement, writing genres, Cornerstone strategies for building literacy and a host of other skills.

Students are asked to bring the following supplies to school by Monday, July 21, 2008:

6 plastic folders with prongs: (red, green, blue yellow, purple and orange)
    1 hand sanitizer
    1 box of Kleenex
    Loose leaf paper
    Red ink pen
    Pencils
2 black and white composition notebooks

My homework policy is: Homework is administered to students every night of the week except Friday. Thursday’s homework is always to study for Friday’s quizzes. Students are expected to review class work on a nightly basis.

My grading policy is the same as that of the MCSD policy on grading. In addition, students who complete their homework will receive extra credit. Unfortunately, students who consistently miss assignments will not be given multiple opportunities to make up work. Our main objective in 5th grade is to adequately prepare for middle school. Responsibility and accountability are two key words that will help us prepare for our mission.

Class work and conduct folders are sent home every Monday. Please sign your child’s conduct sheet and return the folder to the school by Tuesday.

Upcoming school events you should be aware of include:

Open House on July 28th
school surveys go home on July 21
Ident-A-Kid TBA
F.B.I. Meeting August 5
Progress Reports/Fall Pictures August 6
Vision/Hearing Screening August 14

Please mark these dates on your calendar. Studies show that parental involvement in a child’s education is one of the strongest indicators of student achievement. We hope you will make it a priority this year to attend as many school-sponsored events as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns or if you would like to visit our classroom, schedule a conference, or volunteer to help out, you can contact me at 706-565-2989. Please leave a message in the office and I will return your call by the end of the school day.

Once again, welcome to 5th grade. Let’s work together to make this the best year ever!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Lydia Winston-Jackson
