Description(s): The Life Science class is a course designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills for proficiency at the seventh grade level. The Major Concepts and skills that will be covered during this course are: Ecology, Energy Flow and Nutrient Cycling, Structure and Function of Cells, Organization of Life, Biological traits and Heredity, Evidence of Evolution.

Goals:
1.    Students will be able to record investigations clearly and accurately
2.    Students will be able to use scientific tools
3.    Students will be able to interpret graphs, tables, and charts
4.    Students will be able to write clearly
5.    Students will be able to use proper units
6.    Students will be able to organize data into graphs, tables, and charts
7.    Students will be able to use models
8.    Students will be able to ask quality questions
9.    Students will be able to use technology
10.    Students will be able to use lab safety techniques
11.    Students will be able to analyze scientific data via calculations and inference
12.    Students will be able to recognize the importance of explaining data with precision and accuracy

Requirements:
1.    traditional blue or black pen
2.    pencil (preferably mechanical)
3.    three pronged folder with notebook paper (preferably green)
4.    8 – 12 pack of colored pencils
5.    positive attitude

Missed Assignments:
All assignments are to be turned in on time.  Assignments turned in late will receive a late penalty.

Attendance:
Attendance is required everyday.  Students who have excused absences have three days to make up any missed assignments.

Evaluation:
Student grades will be assessed using the following assignment percentages: Class work 25 %, Homework 15 %, Quiz/Test 25, Participation 10%, Labs 15 %, and Project 10 %.

Extra Credit
Extra Credit assignments will be assigned to the whole class at least twice a nine weeks grading period.  No individual extra credit assignments will be given.

STANDARDS: S7L2. Students will describe the structure and function of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. b. Relate cell structures (cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplasts, mitochondria) to basic cell functions. d. Explain that tissues, organs, and organ systems serve the needs cells have for oxygen, food, and waste removal.
