Mrs. Farley's Eigth Grade Language Arts Class

Standards

ELA8C1-The student demonstrates understanding and control of the rules of the English language, realizing that usage involves the appropriate application of conventions and grammar in both written and spoken formats.

ELA8LSV1-The student participates in student-to-teacher, student-to-student, and group verbal interactions.

ELAW4-The student consistently uses the writing process to develop, revise, and evaluate writing.

It is important that students establish and implement effective study habits as assignments become more involved.

This week, our class will write expository essays in preparation for the Middle Grades Writing Assessment in January.

Tests- There are no scheduled tests for this week.

Winter Break-December 22, 2008-January 5, 2009.

Classes resume January 6, 2009.

Homework-Homework assignments are to be written in student agenda books.  Please check agenda books for homework on a daily basis.  Homework is due the next day.  I do not accept late homework.

Absences-When a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to make up any and all missed assignments.  If a student does not make up missed assignments, the grade will result in zero. I do not give extra credit work.

Warm ups are due every Friday, and count as a test grade.

Accelerated Reader counts as ten percent of the Language Arts grade.  The breakdown is as follows:
5%= Number of books (4)
5%= Average Percent Correct

Students will only be allowed to take tests in the Language Arts classroom.  Furthermore, students will check out books in their reading range from the media center.  While students will have the opportunity to read throughout the day at school, it is the responsibility of the student to read at home to complete all Accelerated Reader requirements.

The grading rules for Language Arts are as follows:
35% Tests
35% Classwork
10% Homework
10% Participation
10% Accelerated Reader

It is the student's responsibility to make sure they are reading and testing on AR books, as well as meeting all other AR requirements.

Reminder:  Students are responsible for all of their textbooks and AR books.  Textbooks and AR books should be brought to class on a daily basis.

Please remind your child to study for all upcoming tests.

Make sure your child wears his/her school id badge daily.
