Standards

ELA8C1-The student demonstrates understanding and control of the rules of the English language, realizing that usage involves the appropriate application of conventions and grammar in both written and spoken formats.

ELA8R1 The student demonstrates comprehension and shows evidence of a warranted and responsible explanation of a variety of literary and informational texts.

ELA8R2 The student understands and acquires new vocabulary and uses it correctly in reading and writing.

ELA8R3 The student reads aloud, accurately, familiar material in a variety of genres, in a way that makes meaning clear to listeners.

ELA8LSV1-The student participates in student-to-teacher, student-to-student, and group verbal interactions.

ELAW4-The student consistently uses the writing process to develop, revise, and evaluate writing.

Our class is currently working from the Holt Handbook in Chapter 5, The Phrase. We will specifically identify and analyze the following types of phrases:  prepositional phrases, verbal phrases, and appositive phrases. The vocabulary words associated with this unit are as follows:

1. phrase
2. prepositional phrase
3. adjective phrase
4. adverb phrase
5. verbal phrases
6. participle
7. participial phrase
8. gerund
9. gerund phrase
10. infinitive
11. infinitive phrase
12. appositive
13. appositive phrase

Tests:
Chapter 5 Vocabulary Test, The Phrase, will be Friday, November 13, 2009.  

Veteran's Day Holiday-Wednesday, November 11, 2009-No school for students, faculty, and staff.

The second nine-weeks grading period has begun.  Please remind your child to study for any and all upcoming tests.  Furthermore, students should complete all homework, classwork, projects, etc. on time in order to receive credit.  Students must read and test on four AR chapter books in their reading range before the end of the grading period.

Grading Scale:
40% Tests
30% Classwork
10% Participation
10% Accelerated Reader
10% Homework

Reminders:

1. Students should bring their AR books to class daily, and read nightly. For the first nine-week grading period, students will be responsible for reading and testing on three AR chapter books in their reading range.

2. Homework is posted in class each day.  It is the student's responsibility to write it down in an agenda book.

3.Students should study nightly for any and all upcoming tests.

4.When a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to make up any and all missed classwork, homework, tests, projects, etc.

5. Student identification badges should be worn at all times at Rothschild Middle School.
