We have come to a close with the various American Literature periods. There is just one more period to go, which will be discussed after the GHSGT week.

Next week class will not be in session for four days as the students are taking the GHSGT. I wish them all the luck and may they be successful. Please make sure that your child gets enough sleep and eats a good breakfast each day.

Upcoming tests: Every other Friday we take an SAT test. This test is divided in two: the first part is a matching of definition with the word, and the second part is choosing the correct word to fill the gap in a sentence. Make sure that your child practices the SAT words. I will have brief practice sessions as well.

Journals: Every day the students are required to write 7-10 sentences to a topic given. We are working on sentence structure and I require the students to implement what we studied in class (grammar lesson on Thursdays). The topics cover a wide variety and are meant to improve a students' writing. The more the students practice, the better their writing will be. Further, they have to learn to answer to often complex and out of the box questions/topics to enhance critical thinking skills. Only if they can perform to that level, will they be able to appreciate other aspects/outlooks.

Multicultural Literature

Within the last two weeks we have discussed and watched several documentaries about Africa. Each student was required to check out a book written about Africa.

Unit   3
Weeks  8-9

African Literature: explore Africa’s history, culture, and language through literature and research on the Internet

Power point presentation of an African country. Students received the outline and rubric and they have received extended time to complete the presentation. It is due on Monday, March 17. On Tuesday, and eventually Wednesday, the students will then teach their classmates about the country of thier choice.

Story creations: During a period of two weeks students have time to write a five paragraph story to a given topic or element. The first ten minutes they brainstorm, draft, revise, edit, and write a final draft. I have so far been very pleased with the results. Thank you to all of those who took their time and typed it up, it made it so much easier for me to read and correct it.
