Below are a few language arts reminders and tips for helping your student.
-We have a vocabulary test every Friday. Begin studying on Monday night. Review 10-15 minutes each night. This makes Thursday nights less painful and Friday test time easier.
-If you click on "Flashcards" under my name when you open this page, you will find review cards for the week's vocabulary words. Students have been taken to the computer lab and shown how to use these to study for the test.
-Students do have an extra credit sheet they may use with their vocabulary words. They may receive up to a maximum of 10 extra credit points on the vocabulary test each week. This can help if vocabulary, grammar, reading, or writing is a particular weakness. Since this is a test grade which counts 50% of their average, it can add up over the nine weeks. It's also a great way to review those vocabulary words during the week. Extra credit must be turned in by Thursday.
-If your child has difficulty with reading, try one of the following:
          1. Read together. Listen to your child read. Let your child hear you read. Take turns reading a page or a chapter.
          2. Let your child read something from a magazine or newspaper. Let him/her chose the article/comic strip/movie review/etc. Then (after you read it, too) have him/her tell you about it. Ask a few questions.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2

Social Studies-
1. DOG test Friday-Be sure if you have been absent that you get a copy of any questions and answers that you missed. You will use these to take the test.
2. Read Chapter 8 Section 3, pp.190-193. Answer these 3 questions:
-Name at least three reasons European nations wanted colonies in Africa.
     -Define imperialism.
-Name three effects imperialism had on Africa.

Even if you have not finished the book(s), you will need to renew them and read them while we are in the library. You cannot check out a book without your ID. Everyone should have finished at least one book by now so you can take an AR test if you haven't already.
3. Have your green grade sheet signed. We will have a notebook check tomorrow and that will be one of the things I will check.

Social Studies
DOG test tomorrow-Be sure you have your DOG in class. You will use these on the test.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5
Next week is MAP. We will test in Reading on Monday, Language Arts on Tuesday, and Social Studies on Friday. Students need a #2 pencil and a library book. We went to the library today so everyone should have a book. If a student did not have his/her ID, he/she will need to bring it Monday and get a book before 1st block.

Progress reports go home Wednesday. They will need to be signed and returned Thursday.
