Vocabulary words are:
1. runt--Wilbur is the runt of the litter. Runt is the smallest animal in the litter. It is often thought the runt will not survive. But with special care and love, the runt can become normal-sized.
2. injustice--Fern is angry at the injustice of having to kill the runt of the litter, Wilbur. Injustice means something that is not fair or something that is unjust. Fern feels this way because she doesn't think just because something is small, it should not be given a chance to live and grow.
3. gosling--In the barnyard with Wilbur, there are goslings with their mother, the goose. Goslings are young geese. Wilbur tries to be friends with the goslings.
4. salutations--When Charlotte greets Wilbur, she says, "Salutations." Salutations is a fancy way of saying hello to someone. It shows that Charlotte has a good vocabulary.
5. glutton--Templeton is a glutton--he eats too much and he does not use his manners. Of course, these are typical characteristics of a rat. Charlotte uses the fact that Templeton is a glutton to help her save Wilbur.
6. spinnerets--Charlotte has spinnerets. They help her spin her web. Children can learn a lot about spiders through the novel, Charlotte's Web. You may want children to make a list in journals of spider facts while reading.
7. campaign--Charlotte is on a campaign to save Wilbur's life. A campaign is a series of planned actions to accomplish a goal of some sort. Students may have heard the word campaign more closely related to politics.
8. radiant--Charlotte uses the word radiant in her web to describe Wilbur. Wilbur is radiant because he shines with joy and life. Radiant can also mean something that shines brightly.
9. mercy--The Zuckermans show mercy to Wilbur by not selling him or slaughtering him once Charlotte shows them how special he is. Mercy is showing compassion.
10. descended--Descended means to move down. In Charlotte's Web, Charlotte descended on her silk string so she can talk to Wilbur, and he can see her better.

September 7-11
NOTES: MONDAY IS LABOR DAY! NO SCHOOL!
SCIENCE INFO FOR 9 WEEKS REPORT:
1. Students need at least one note card per
question. Students have questions.
2. Questions can be answered by using internet,
a book (from the school library, county
library or from home), an encyclopedia, or
they may use journals or science magazines
(National Geographic, Ranger Rick, etc.).
3. A note card needs to be made on any book or
magazine from which student gets
information. Place the number of the
question on the front of the card. List
question, the answer, and the page on which
the answer was found. On the other side
of the card, list the title or book or
journal, the author, publisher, where
published, and the copyright. We have
covered this information on documentation in
class.
4. In addition, students may use their
flashdrives to do research on the internet.
The school library website (Destiny) has a
list of encyclopedia and approved links to
excellent research tools for students. When
a student copies any work or picture from a
website, they need to copy the www address
from the address bar and place this before
article on their save work. Other info
needed for proper documentation is to type
in the date the website was found and work
was copied, and also if able to locate on
the cite; students need to document the date
the article was written and the author of
article. (Hard to locate. Not necessary.)
5. All of the science questions given to
students can be found in their science
books. As soon as all info is located and
put on either a card or flashdrive, we will
begin putting together their choice of a
powerpoint or a dvd. Instructions will be
given at a later date on that process.
Students are to do this work on their own,
but as with all science/math competitions,
adults can provide instruction on the "how
to".
6. The research on these projects will be due
on the September 30th. Projects may be
worked on at home. Please help to make
sure that students document ALL work!
7. On October 1, we will begin putting the
projects together using student choice of
presentation. Again, this work may be
done at home and at school. The student
will be asked questions concerning how the
project was put together. Students will
also be chosen as lab helpers based on
knowledge and performance level in using
computer programs. We will not wait on
the October 1 date to begin putting the
presentations together if students have
research complete earlier. Students have
been shown presentations students turned
in last year, so they may have ideas
already in mind concerning how they want
their final project to look.
8. Please email any questions on this
project and I will post the question/answer
on this website for others to view.
Monday- LABOR DAY! NO SCHOOL!
Tuesday- Lunch: Beef a roni or P&J.

NOTES:
Welcome to my class. I am so excited about my group of students this year! We are going to be working on some interesting subjects and learning lots of new skills. Old skills that are a must are first and foremost the multiplication facts. Please drill your child nightly on these facts. We cannot go on to division skills required in 4th grade until students know multiplication facts. Please help any way you can to get these facts stored in memory. Students should have an instant response to these facts. (No counting on fingers and drawing pictures to get the answer.) We will be testing daily until all students have passed fact families 1-12.
Attendance; I have compared student attendance with final testing scores from the past few years and I have found that the students that did best on the CRCT were not tardy or absent unless absolutely necessary. I have set in place a reward system for the class for each day that all students are present by 8:45 a.m. They are very excited about this plan. If a bus is late or a dental or doctor appointment is documented for a tardy, the class WILL still get points. Please help your child get here on time each morning, or send documentation of dental or doctor appointment if they come in late.
We will be using a checkbook method of positive discipline this year within our classroom. This system rewards good behavior, excellent grades, goals met, and compliments from other teachers on class behavior. We will deduct points as fines for undesirable behavior. These points will be added to your child's checkbook each week. If they loose their checkbook, they cannot get the points in the lost checkbook restored. Help your child make sure they bring their checkbook to school each day, and by looking over it with them each week to understand weekly grade totals and deductions of points. The reason for deductions will be listed. On Friday we will have an auction. I will accept donations for the auction box from parents, grandparents, and anyone else who would like to help. I spend quite a bit each year buying for the auction box, so any help will be greatly appreciated. An item will sometimes auction for a very high price, but the student with the highest total in their checkbook rules. So encourge high marks and good behavior. This method of discipline works and is a lot of fun!
We are keeping a list of volunteer hours this year in our class. If you have time that you can donate to our class, or if grandparents do, please drop by. I always have plenty of activities to do with a small group of students that can only be done if we have volunteers to help. Please come to orientation on the 18th and visit with me about times you could help in our class. By the way, P.T.A. meetings and open house attendance will earn your child $1000.00 in their checkbook for each attended meeting. Be sure you sign in, so they will get credit.

We are working on special projects in Science and Social Studies this year. These projects can be worked on at home. We will also be working on them in the classroom. All books are permitted to be taken home. Please encourgae your child to bring books home. Be sure they return them each day for classtime use. The first project will be research on a chosen endangered animal. Each student is to choose an endangered animal by Friday. They will need to have a flash drive in order to record information researched on computers and to work on the presentation of this project. The flash drive should have their name on it and they will need to bring it to school each day starting Monday the 17th. I will list instructions for the project starting on Monday the 18th. These are only to be student work. Parents can teach their child how to use computer programs or give ideas for the project, but the work must be completed by the student. The best of these projects will be entered in the Georgia Media Festival and the Muscogee County Tech Fair. We were very proud of our class winners from last year. Four of our projects went to state.
** A note about homework: With our busy schedules, we sometimes have limited time to do homework. Homework is required and should be turned in on the day it is due and requested. It can be completed early if the student understands the work. Do not turn in work early! Keep in Owl Book until due. I hope this method is more convenient for your family as our youth participate in sports and other after school activities.
***Check Owl Book each day for parent comunication and each week for graded papers.
