STANDARDS for Unit 1 - Chapters 4 (4.3 and 4.4); and 7 (Data) in your new book (first 4 weeks of school - all standards can be found on the gadoe website):
M7D1: Students will pose questions, collect data,
represent, and analyze the data, and
interpret results.
M7A3: Students will understand relationships
between two variables.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS that we will be asking include:
What is meant by the center of a data set, how
is it found and how is it useful when
analyzing data?
How can I describe variation within a data set?
In what ways are sample statistics related to the
corresponding population parameters?
How do I choose and create appropriate graphs to
represent data?
What conclusions can be drawn from data?
HOMEWORK
Monday - Aug. 25
Your children had an opportunity to raise their
test grade by correcting their tests and getting a parent's signature. It is always amazing to me that when given the chance to do this, how few respond. It is too late now to do so, but for those who too advantage of the higher grade, good for you!
Today, we collected data for a box-and-whiskers plot. We did not have much time then to finish the work.
1st period - set up number line and find 3 medians
3rd & 4th periods - find the experimental mean of
your data
Challenge problems were given out. They are due on Friday. You must do 2 out of the 3. If you do the third one, go to www.colstate.edu/mathcontest and write your answer on the site. If you are correct, you get to share 20 bonus points with all those in your class period who also got it correct. If you are the very first of any of my students to answer it correctly, you also get 20 bonus points by yourself. If you are not correct, your name will not appear on the site, and you have another chance to answer again. Remember, that problem must be answered and all work shown on Friday's paper to get your bonus points.
Tuesday, Aug. 26
We went to the computer lab and practiced getting on to work on our definitions for a crossword puzzle. We then collected our data from yesterday and began to organize that data into a frequency chart. There were two pieces of data from each student - an estimate and an experimental mean.
1st period students are to draw a double box &
whiskers plot
3rd and 4th period students are to finish their
chart and find the median for both the
estimates and for the mean
Wed., Aug. 27
1st period - we got through "The Eyes Have It." Students decided they needed tonight to complete and clean it up before submitting it tomorrow. They have pg. 396, #9-12 and 16 for homework. Ask them to show you a box-and-whisker plot and explain the parts of it.
Ask what an outlier is and how it can affect the data. Only 3 students out of 26 did not have their homework.
3rd period - we got through the parts of a box-and-whisker plot. We took some notes on the plot. Thirteen out of 27 students had their homework today. It would have taken less than 3 minutes to do the work. Ask your child which half of the class he/she fell into. We did not get as far in the class because we had to wait for some to catch up by doing their homework. They have pg. 388, #1-5 for homework.
4th period - we got through their data in class, drew a box-and-whisker plot and named the parts, looked quickly (and will review tomorrow) at the parts, took some notes on the plot and will be completing some of the questions tonight on the sheet because they were given the answers in class and just need to clean them up. They have pg. 388, #1-5 for homework. Thirteen out of 23 students had homework today.
IMPORTANT! If your child has a second day without homework, I will write them up for not bringing their materials to class.
Thursday - Aug. 28
The only thing due tomorrow is the Challenge Problem 2 sheet. It is to be turned in first thing. I will not be in school because I have some business I have to take care of in Alabama. We have had a busy week. There will be no homework over the holiday. Have a safe one and come back ready to get started.
