Expectations of Student Learning
Students should…
• Be an active learner rather than passive (participate, discuss, ask).
• Develop skills needed to work with others, such as, organizational skills. Appreciate the diversity of human differences.
• Develop an understanding and appreciation for the importance of mathematics in the real world.
• Communicate, orally and in writing, mathematical thoughts and experiences.
• Analyze and select appropriate tools for solving a problem, and explain this procedure orally or in writing.
Expectations of Students Behavior
Students will…
•Report to class on time.
•Bring necessary materials, such as, textbook, binder, assignments, pencil and calculator to class so that you may be prepared to work.
•Be responsible for all work that is missed if absent. Make up work is accepted ONLY when it is an excused absence.
•Stay on task and be engaged in activities at hand.
•Be respectful of their teacher, classmates, and property.
*Students will not eat, drink, or chew gum in the classroom, unless authorized by the teacher.
All other school procedures and policies will be enforced as deemed in the student code of conduct handbook.
Inappropriate behavior can interfere with student learning, whether it’s on the job or in the classroom. Therefore, I have developed consequences if those behaviors are not practiced. Please don’t feel threatened. Most students already have appropriate behavior and will never experience the consequences listed or at most, need a reminder.
Consequences of Inappropriate Behavior
Failure to comply with classroom procedures and policies will result in:
1st offense Detention
2nd offense Contact Parent
3rd offense Discipline Referral
Note: Some offenses will be reported immediately to the Assistant Principal/Principal, as directed by the student code of conduct.
Classroom Procedures
Materials/Resources:
Textbook: Mathematics with Business Applications
Note: Any four function calculator will be useful in this class. Although the calculator is not required it is recommended.
Learning Strategies:
We will be using manipulatives and models, cooperative/collaborative learning, large and small group discussions, active investigation and problem solving, and technology.
Grading Scale:
A 90- 100 (excellent)
B 80- 89 (above average)
C 70- 79 (average)
BELOW 70 (failing/no credit)
This grade is determined by using a point system. See below for grade distribution.
Grading Distribution:

Individual Assignments:
•Warm-up activities will be assigned daily (with some exceptions). They will be expected to be completed and may be collected for a grade.
•Special projects will be assigned periodically. (Points vary)
•Journals will reflect your mathematical learning experiences after each chapter. (100 points)
oJournals will be have 3 parts and have to be at the least one page and no longer than 2 pages.
1st part What you learned from the chapter?
2nd part How you can use the mathematics that you
learned in the chapter in the real world?
3rd part Create a story containing 5 vocabulary words
from the chapter.
