Building a Foundation for Learning

READING - 20 minutes a night -"If you want to become a good reader - read a lot. If you want to become a good writer - read a lot."  This cannot be stressed enough.  Reading as much print as possible is so important to your child's development. Now is the time to set the standard. Read to them, and with them (take turns reading paragraphs or pages). Read poems, read nursery rhymes, read Bible stories, read what you have already read, but just read!  It would be fun to read the same poem or verse with different voices -  happy, sad, excited, angry, etc. Read the words to songs from a hymn book or on-line. Look up cheers, chants, or famous speeches. The more a student reads, the better his performance will be. Give your children a gift no one can take away - the love of reading. You will be amazed at the results!

Please use the AR website at the bottom of this page to determine the level and point value of books your child might be reading at home. It is also handy to use when looking for books as gifts.

NOTES:

  • May 12th - Scholastic Book orders due
  • May 13th - Chapel
  • May 16th - We will celebrate summer birthdays at lunchtime.
  • May 27th - end of year concert. Students are encouraged to wear red, white, and blue.
  • Please return signed test papers the next day.
  • I appreciate all you do for your child. Keep us in your prayers daily.

May 12th-16th

Bible - This year, Detective Dog will be helping us find God's promises in His Word. This week we will learn about the Golden Calf. Our Bible verse is I John 4:13. Bible memory and quiz are on Friday.

Reading -  We have begun a new cluster on plot. See the bottom of schoolnotes for information regarding this cluster.

Math - Please look over daily work and quiz your child on missed problems. Red answers indicate that the time-limit lapsed before the problems were answered. This indicates a need to improve speed in recalling answers to problems. They should be able to recall answers as quickly as they can say their name.

This week: We will multiply by 5, write mixed numbers, create and read a bar graph, identify right angles, and learn to multiply by 2.

Spelling -  For the next 2 weeks, we will focus on the mastery of spelling second grade sight words. Students will have their own lists, depending on which words they need to learn. I will give them daily assignments for homework.  Friday - Test

Phonics - We will be reviewing the di/tri/quadrigraphs, combinations and dipthongs, final stable syllables, spelling patterns and rules, and syllable division. We will have an assessment on Friday.

English -  We will complete our descriptive paragraph, and begin working on a report. This will be in conjunction with a science lesson on the shoreline and ocean.

Science - We will finish looking at the characteristics of things that are living versus nonliving. We will begin working on a report about sea life.

Handwriting -  We will practice writing paragraphs.

Reading Cluster: Plot

Pattern: When you try to reach a goal or solve a problem, anticipation rises until something happens that influences the outcome.

Objective: Given a teacher selected text, each student will identify the goal or problem, rising action events, the climax, and the resolution.

Process Questions:

  • What is the main character's goal or what problem does he have?
  • What are the events that relate to the goal or problem?
  • How does the story end?
  • What is the turning point (climax) that leads to the story's ending?
  • How are the problem or goal, climax, and ending related? (proficient)
  • What significant event(s) occur after the climax that connect the ending to the climax? (exemplary)
  • Visual Tool: Character bubble map, plot line
