Reading Cluster: Plot
Our new reading cluster is called, plot. With this cluster the students will be able to identify the main character and his/her primary problem or goal, attempts to reach the goal or solve the problem, blocks, the climax (the turning point of the story or the most intense point), and falling action (concluding events) leading to the resolution. Follow the resolution is the denouement (dey-noo-mahn), which is the story ending or "happily every after" (or otherwise) conclusion.
Below are the skills and tool that will be used to complete this cluster. When reading with your student at home; try and ask some of the process questions to your child. This will help reinforce what we are doing at school during reading time.
Pattern
When you try to reach a goal or solve a problem, anticipation rises until something happens that influences the outcome.
Process Questions
*What is the character's goal or problem?
*What are the events that relate to the goal or problem?
*How does the story end?
*What is the turning point (climax) that leads to the story's ending?
*How are the problem or goal, climax, and ending related? [Better level question]
*What significant event(s) occur after the climax that connect the ending to the climax? [Best level question]
