Honors Earth Space Science
Course Syllabus

Course Description: This class utilizes the Earth Science in the Community (EarthComm) curriculum.  EarthComm covers fewer topics than the traditional Earth Science textbook.  It emphasizes important concepts, understandings, and abilities that all students can use to make wise decisions, think critically, and understand and appreciate the Earth system.

We will cover the following topics during the course of the year:
•    Severe weather
•    Oceans
•    Climate change
•    Astronomy
•    Plate tectonics
•    Volcanoes and Earthquakes

This course follows the A-B block schedule.  Students will attend class on alternate days and will take this course for the entire school year.

Materials Required in Class Daily:
•    A binder to organize your assignments and handouts, preferably with section dividers
•    Notebook paper
•    A pencil and pen
Please bring all of these supplies each class period.  You will be using these daily!

Grading:
Your quarterly grade will break down as follows:
  In-class activities and classwork:      30%
  Quizzes and warmups:                 10%
  Homework and assignments:           20%
  Exams and performance tasks:             40%

The grading scale is as follows:
        90-100%   A
        80-89%      B
        70-79%      C
        60-69%      D
        Below 60% F

Notebook:  All of your coursework, notes, and handouts will be kept in your class notebook.  An organized notebook is an important part of your success in this course.  You must bring it to class every day.  Your notebook will be checked periodically for a grade.  The notebook should be a three ring binder (spiral-bound notebooks or pocket portfolios are not acceptable for this purpose).  Ideally, it should be organized with insertable tab dividers (an 8-tab set will be sufficient).  One section will be for this syllabus and other handouts, the second will be for your chapter challenge, and you will have one section for each chapter covered.  You may add additional sections for further organization, if you wish.

Homework:  Homework should be placed in the homework bin before the tardy bell rings.  Homework turned in after the tardy bell on the day it is due will be considered late.

Late Work/Missed Work:  Students may turn work in late if they have an excused absence.  A one day extension will be given for each day of class missed.  Additionally, Mr. Allen may consider accepting late work if prior notice is given.  It is the student’s responsibility to make up work that is missed.  Unexcused late work is not accepted.

Chapter Challenge: For each chapter, a performance task called the Chapter Challenge will be assigned.  Each student will be challenged to solve a problem based in our community, and create a product (such as a report, a story, or a booklet).  Specific details will be given at the beginning of each chapter.

Extra Credit: Students will periodically be allowed to do an extension of an assignment for extra credit.  A student may only take advantage of these opportunities if they completed the original assignment.

Science Project: All honors science students must produce an inquiry-based science fair project.  Further details will be provided.

Tardiness: Please be on time.  The classroom will be locked when the bell rings.  If you are tardy, you must get a tardy slip from the community office in order to be allowed in.

Hall Passes:  Hall passes will be issued for emergency situations only.  Students should take care of personal needs between classes, during lunch, and/or before and after school.

Food and Drink:  Food and drink (other than water in sealed containers) may not be consumed in class at any time.

Cell Phones and Electronic Devices: Electronic devices such as iPods, mp3 players, walkmans, radios, CD players are not to be used in the classroom.  Electronic devices will be confiscated if used in the classroom.  Cellular phones are not to be visible during the school day and must be concealed in a book bag or locker.  If you bring a cell phone to class, it must be concealed in your pocket or backpack and set to silent.  If a cell phone is seen or heard, it will be confiscated.

Remediation: If you do not earn a quarterly grade of “C” or higher in this class, you will be given an opportunity to raise your grade through grade recovery.  Grade recovery will be completed online through the Compass Odyssey system. Students will be required to demonstrate mastery of the skills and knowledge taught for that grading period.  Students must request grade recovery within the first week after report cards have been issued and must be completed in the first five weeks of the following quarter.  The new grade will be no higher than a “C.”  Grade recovery is not available for the final nine week grading period.

Plagiarism:  Taking ideas or writings from another person and offering them as your own, whether from the internet, another student, or any other source is considered plagiarism and will result in a failing grade for the assignment.

Extra Help: Your fellow students are an excellent resource, and you are encouraged to find a “study buddy” or form a study group.  Check the Class Notes web site for links to other resources.  Additionally, Mr. Allen will usually be available after school until 2:30, and may be available later, by appointment, to assist you.
