TEXT:
College Preparatory Mathematics Geometry
Volume One and Two
SpringBoard
www.collegeboard.com/springboard

DESCRIPTION:
The daily activities in this course will require much more work in study teams and much less introduction and explanation of ideas by the teacher.  Study team interaction is an integral part of the learning process.  The quality of thinking may be improved in several ways, including focused discussions within study teams, students’ presentations to the whole class, and students and the teacher modeling good thinking by “thinking out loud” to the team or the whole class.  Students will be allowed to explore problems and gradually construct their own understanding.  Teacher led discussions will be used in summarizing results of study teams and to tie together big ideas.

GOALS:
1.    Use their problem solving skills in data organization, looking for patterns, drawing diagrams, making systematic lists/tables, finding and solving sub problems, and writing algebraic representations to make and test conjectures about angles, lines, congruence, polygons, circles, etc.;
2.    Communicate their mathematical understanding in clear conjectures, explanations and/or justifications (logical arguments – proofs);
3.    Understand and exploit the interdependence between algebra and geometry;
4.    Learn a core set of geometric facts and relationships about polygons, circles, prisms, congruence, measure, etc.;
5.    Use coordinate geometry as often as possible, particularly for the study of area, perimeter, transformations, congruence and functions;
6.    Develop spatial visualization skills and apply them to the study of three-dimensional figures;
7.    Develop facility with ratios, particularly in the areas of similarity, right triangle trigonometry, and probability.

EXPECTATIONS:

1.    Respect, restraint and responsibility.
2.    Listen and question.
3.    Prepare to learn.
4.    Respect the teacher’s classroom rules and procedures.

REQUIREMENTS:
Students will be given problems to complete daily.  All homework and class work assignments will be posted on www.schoolnotes.com.

Any Late/Missing Assignments will not be accepted with out prior permission.  Parents may contact me and make arrangements for special circumstances in advance.   Parents will be allowed to submit in writing a request for an extension on a homework assignment.  It will be granted no more than one time a term without a late penalty.

A student may complete one extra credit assignment per term in order to forgive a grade of a zero on one homework assignment.  The highest grade on the assignment will be 75%.

All work must follow the Categories for Write up which are detailed below:
(One step, two step and three step method)

One, Two and Three Step Method

One           All work will have your name, date and period on the top right hand corner. All questions will be stated in your own words. (Tell me what you are doing?)

Two    Think-----Solve
    What is your strategy for solving the problem/?  Show your work
    Explain
    What was your thought process?  How did you solve the problem?

Three    Write a conclusion.  (Make sure your conclusion answers the original question)

Students will complete team tests and quizzes within study teams during class.

Students will have individual unit tests at the end of each unit.

Students will complete a midterm and a comprehensive final exam.

RESOURCES:
See www.schoolnotes.com for additional information.

EVALUATION:

The assignments will be weighted by the type of activity.

•    Classwork/Homework  will earn 100 points each
•    Team tests and team quizzes will count 200 points (completed within a group)
•    Individual quizzes will count 200 to 400 depending on concept
•    Unit Tests will count 600 to 1000 points depending on concept
•    Projects will range from 600 to 1000 depending on concept
•    Any assignment not listed will have point value assigned when given to the student

Grading Scale

90 - 100    A
80 - 89     B
70 - 79     C
60 - 69     D < 60        F

Progress Reports using the Grade Quick Program does not show the weight scale only the possible points out of 100 each assignment has earned.  The weights are listed above and are available to the students within the class.  I suggest that on the top of each assignment that is weighted more than hundred points that the student writes the weight on the top of the assignment for future reference when calculating grade for the class.

STUDY ASSISTANCE:
See www.schoolnotes.com for tutoring opportunities times throughout the year.
Parents and students may email me from the school notes web site and I will respond within 48 hours.

Students who need additional help may seek  tutoring opportunities at the college campus in the tutoring lab and utilize the web sites I have provided at the bottom of the page on school notes.

I will answer any questions for the first fifteen minutes after school each day.  Students need to prepare questions in advance and have details on what they do not understand so that I may offer help.

www. Hotmath.com will have the answers and the solution process for homework problems.

Supply List

Pencil/paper (college ruled)
Graph paper
Color pencils
Ruler
Ti-83 or Ti-84 highly recommended any other model will be the student's responsibility to read instruction manual
Notebook ( 1 1/2 inch with five dividers)

*Class Expectations (rules, procedures and syllabus)
*Classwork/Homework (Algebra)
*Classwork/Homework (Geometry)
*Toolkit and Notes
*Tests/ Quizzes
It is recommended that you place items such as ruler and colored pencils in a small pouch within your notebook.

GRADE RECOVERY

If you do not earn a grade “C” or higher you will be given an opportunity to earn a grade no higher than a “C” utilizing grade recovery.  My grade recovery will be individually based for each student.  The student will be required to demonstrate the standards that were taught for that grading period and pass a test with a grade of a 75% or higher.  The student may participate in grade recovery one time per math class.  The student must request grade recovery with in the first week after the grade is issued.  (Parent conference highly recommended)

IT IS IMPORTANT TO GET ORGANIZED AND PLAN FOR SUCCESS!!!

*****************************************************
You must pass the college placement test in order to attend college classes.  Early College has placed assignments online using My Skills Tutor.  This program will help to preview your basic math skills, algebra, english, reading, science and writing.  The program starts with a pretest.  Take the pretest if you score 80% or higher move to the next pretest.  If you score lower than 80% please complete the activities below that pretest.
