~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~September 5, 2007 Announcement~~~~~~
As president of your PTSA I wanted to let you know that we have signed up over 200 members and have recieved donations (in place of fund raisers) of over $2500.00! I want to thank each and every one of you who have participated. We have 30+ students who qualified for the free dance wih contributions of $50.00 or more. The dance may be changed to a special treat due to the low number of qualifying students. Stay tuned. While this is a great start, with enrollment of over 1000 students, only 20% are supporting the PTSA. I can only point out, without you and your support we will not reach our proposed budget of $16,000. Please remember, all this money goes to projects for your child. We need everyone to join the PTSA and to make some kind of contribution.
We have a board meeting scheduled for Tuesday the 11th of September at 6:30PM in the library. We desperately need parents or grandparents to serve on our board of directors. If you have any interest please come to the meeting or call me at (904)-704-2160. We need you. Your children need you to participate. This is your oppurtunity to voice your ideas and to get in on helping the direction we are going. All ideas are greatly appreciated.
PTSA NEWS
The last day for the $50.00 donation for the Fall Special PTSA Free Event for students is September 28, 2007. The Special Event will be held on October 12, 2007. More information to follow.
A big thank you to the families who have reached the $50.00 level. Also a big thanks for all the donations that we have received. If you have made a donation of less than $50.00, you can add to whatever you have donated, so your child can attend. Most everyone we have talked with is in love with the idea of no fundraisers. Our biggest problem is we have only reached the $4,000.00 mark and we need to get to the $16,000.00 mark to meet our budget.
If you have not contributed, now is the time to get on the bandwagon. Remember, the money is being used to support your students. To date, only 20% of you have contributed, and out of 1,000 students, we only have 211 PTSA members. WE NEED YOU!!!!
PTSA Newsletter
We wanted to let you know that the PTSA is making
real progress. We have increased our membership to
229 and have received many donations. At last count
we have close to $4,000 in the PTSA account which
you have all helped create. On October 12th all
families that contributed $50.00 or more had their
students attend a two hour celebration featuring all
kinds of food and drink and lots of games and fun.
We still need new members and contributions. Our
budget for the year is $16,000. We are only a quarter
of the way there. We have an enrollment of 1000
students so 229 members is much lower than we would
like. Please support your child and join the PTSA.
Please make a contribution, no matter how small. We
will have another special event in the spring for
families that have a cumulative total of $50.00.
Please help your child by participating. Envelopes
are available at the front desk in the school.
You will receive a flyer in regards to the Jacksonville
Fair. If you are planning to attend, purchase your
tickets on line and select Kirby Smith as your school,
and we will receive 20% of the proceeds. They offer
a Fair Pack, 4 admission tickets for $25.00 and a
Express Pass for $25.00 that allows you unlimited
mechanical rides for any one day. If you are going to
attend, this is a great way to support your school.
Red Ribbon Week judging will take place October 22-25.
All students should wear red for Drug Awareness Week.
The winning home room for each grade will receive free
doughnuts and juice served by the PTSA on Monday,
October 29. This is a chance for free food and drinks.
Candy Grams Program will be offered December 3-7. You will receive more information shortly.
The Student Council and the PTSA will be sponsoring
a food drive in November. Many families are in need
due to economic conditions and we urge all to help
This drive will be coordinated by the Student Council
and Ms. Prime. More to follow.
There will again this year be a poetry contest. See
Ms. Prime for details.
There will be a meeting on October 22 at 6:00pm at
the Main Library on Laura Street to discuss magnet
programs for Duval County students. The Duval County
Magnet Advisory Council will be holding monthly
informational town hall meetings around the district
to give the community a chance to get more information
about existing magnet programs, programs related to
the new grant received and to gather information on
programs that local businesses, parents and students
would like to see created. The PTSA at Kirby Smith
is interested in exploring possibilities of a dedicated magnet high school to which our students
could automatically feed, which would serve as a
continuation of the strong academic and elective
program offered at Kirby Smith. The need is for a
highly competitive academic high school program to be
guaranteed to our students much as students at James
Weldon Johnson and Darnell Cookman are offered ad-
mission to Stanton and Paxon. Please join us for this
very important discussion.
Our next open PTSA meeting will be on November 6,2007
at 5:30pm in the auditorium. We will have a presenta-
tion on narcotics and the problems in our schools.
This will be presented by the Jacksonville Sheriff's
Department. Please come out and learn what we can do
to help with this problem. These officers are donating their time so please plan to attend and let's
learn what we need to know.
NOTICE: THE ABOVE PTSA MEETING SCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER 6,2007 HAS BEEN CHANGED TO NOVEMBER 13, 2007 AT
5:30pm.
-------------------------------------------------------
ATTENTION VOLUNTEERS: Mrs. Prime is looking for
help with the SCA elections on November 6, 2007 in
the Media Center. Any help that you can give between
8:00am and 2:00pm will be greatly appreciated.
NOTE: We will have representation from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office at our November 13th
PTSA meeting at 5:30pm in the auditorium. The topic
will be drugs in the schools and what JSO is doing to
help us. This is a follow-up to Red Ribbon Week and
will give parents a real insight into what is taking
place in the school, and most importantly with our
students. This is the same night as the science
presentation at the school at 6:30pm. Please plan on
attending both meetings. We appreciate the time and
representatives the Sheriff's Office is supplying.
Lets show them we really care by attending.
PTSA News
We want to thank everyone for your attendance at our meeting on November 13, 2007. It was a very imformative session and we want to thank JSO and in particular, Officer Caldwell, who was kind enough to speak to our group and to answer questions in regard to Kirby Smith and his duties at the school. We feel we are very fortunate to have him with us.
As we discussed at the meeting, we are forming a committee to pursue the establishment of a dedicated magnet high school to serve as the school Kirby Smith magnet school will feed into. We have set the date of December 6, 2007 at 6:00PM to meet at Kirby Smith to form an agenda to present to the school board at their meeting on January 8, 2008. This seems to be a primary goal we need to work for, to provide a proper outlet for our magnet students for college prep and to further their education in a safe and challenging atmosphere. The more participation we have on the committee the more attention we are going to get at the school board meeting. We look for a good turn out so we can help our students.
