The first nine weeks has come to a close and we are beginning the second. I am extremely happy to announce that I had outstanding scores on our last math formative!! The students admitted that studying has a tremendous impact on their grades. We have decided to work on having 75% - 100% of A's next nine weeks in math! I know setting the standard a little high, but at least we have a goal!
We are beginning a new unit "Different Shapes, Equal Pieces." In this unit, students explore fractions by dividing square areas into halves, fourths, and eighths and rectangular areas into thirds, sixths, and twelfths. Students also explore ordering and comparing fractions less than, equal to, and greater than 1. Some students are struggling with dividing things in equal fractional parts. Work with your child in the kitchen, around the house whenever you can incorporate fractions to assist them in understanding how things are divided equally into parts.
I need the parents to assist in helping students learn their multiplication tabels and their division facts. The best way for parents to assist their child is to help them create flashcards on index cards and quiz them frequently. Knowing these basic facts is a major key to being successful in math and we will build upon this groundwork throughout the year and many years to come.
Science is coming home in homework form. We will meet the following day and discuss the lesson. We are starting to study why we have seasons.
Many of you have asked when report cards are coming home. I just checked the Duval County calendar and it is reporting that report cards are coming home on November 14th. Check out the calendar on the Duval County website at www.duvalschools.org.
Finally, for those that have tried to log into Destination Success and the original website did not work here is the correct website: http://duval.riverdeep.net/lms. I apologize for the wrong information, we all know how technology works.
Mark your calendars!!
