****Updated on 6/4 for the week of 6/1**** Look for the 4 **** for updated informatio.

I will work on these 2 lists over the next couple of days...

SUMMER FUN:
Cooking and baking
Gardening
Learning to do chores like weeding, raking, trash, make bed, clean out areas, dusting, washing/drying dishes, sweep/mop the floor, clean out the car, fold clothes and put them away

SUMMER TUNE UP FOR 3RD GRADE:
***Always ask what is the author's purpose for writing the text your child is reading. The answer could be for fun and entertainment, for information, to persuade, or to teach a skill (how to/procedural).
1. Read Newberry award classics TO your child or alternate reading to each other to help your child read fluently (quickly with expression). Also you can explain vocabulary, themes, and symbols in these novels. Review character analysis and development over time, changing settings, sequence of events, the problems and solutions.
2. Read and discuss poetry by classic writers. Discuss the meaning of unfamiliar phrases. This is very difficult and takes lots of practice.
3. Read a variety of text. (Plays, Tall Tales, Folk Tales, Historical Fiction, Mysteries, magazines, biography, autobiography)
4. There are FCAT types of workbooks or internet practice to view the types of questions.
5. Have children write or email out of town relatives.
6. Have them write thank you notes, invitations, advertisements, etc...
7. Practice the correct way to answer or make a call.
8. Tape their oral reading and work on improving it.
9. Make a puppet and write a script.
10. Keep a summer diary/journal or a travel one.
11. Write a report, story, how to, or persuasive writing.

THINGS TO KNOW TO FINISH OUT THE YEAR:
****REPORT CARD INSERTS:
1. There will be a school supply list for 3rd grade. You may want to buy a little over time throughout the summer, wait for the bargains in August, or purchase a kit through PTA.
2. If your child rides a school or daycare bus, PLEASE read the NEW information for next year to avoid more confusion.
3. Free summer math and reading technology program brochure.
ATTENTION EXTENDED DAY STUDENTS: There is NO afternoon extended day on the last day of school, Friday, June 5th. Please make plans.
Friday, June 5th: 1/2 day dismissal at 12 noon I think. Report cards MAY NOT BE RELEASED UNTIL DISMISSAL at noon. You may come in during the summer to pick them up if your child is staying at home or leaving early.
Students may bring "old fashion" board games.
Students should bring an empty book bag to bring home any thing left over.
Students have already told me if they want a school lunch for this day. They may bring a lunch or wait till they get home. (Only 6 ordered a school lunch in my homeroom.)Please discuss this with your child.

READING LEVEL: M is the end of 2nd grade; N begins 3rd grade.
