Hope you have a great Valentine's Day!

Next Week:
Tuesday - Field Trip - Marine Science Center Ms. Waller's class.
Wednesday - Early Release Day
Thursday - Field Trip- Marine Science Center Ms.Van Gaasbeek's Class
Friday - Test - Science Simple Machines
         Test - Math

Testing is fast approaching and we still have a lot of ground to cover.  Students need to be focussed and ready to learn.
Math - We are currently doing a unit called Picturing Polygons.  It covers 2D geometry and is quite an engaging unit.  Students will be able to identify polygons and tell what they are.  They have just completed a section on triangles and should be able to  show what the following triangels look line and explain what the words mean:
obtuse scalene, right scalene, acute scalene
acute isosceles, acute scalene
equalateral
Next week we will focus on quadrilaterals.

Science - We are working on Simple Machines and Force and Motion.

Please have your child go to FCAT explorer and work on math and science. They may also work on 4th grade reading or 6th grade reading.

December 11, 2008

We are fast approaching the holidays and children are getting very excited.  Please remind them that they are to continue to do their best because grades are being taken and they count.

Math - We will be working with decimals this week.  Please send your child in with an inexpensive calculator.  One from the dollar store will be just fine.  The students will take the test for this unit when we return from Christmas break.  Students should access the Scott Foresman link below and play the games relating to fractions (Fraction Track).  I will also be sending each child home with 4 fraction games to play over the holidays.  If you don't know how to play your child is to teach you and by doing so they will be able to remember more.
I know it is tempting to teach shortcuts  to students however, it is not beneficial if they do not understand what they are doing and why.
We really want them to understand the math.  So, even though it is tempting to show them to cross multiply fractions, please don't.  Once they understand the math and have a firm foundation we can then utilize the shorter more efficient ways.
Students who have been keeping up in class should be able to tell you how to add fractions such as 1/4 + 5/8   + 1/2 by changing them to equivalent fractions, percents or to say well 5/8 is 1/8 more than 1/2.  1/2 plus 1/2 is one hole and 1/8 + 1/4 is 3/8. so the answer is 1 and 3/8. Or they should say:  1/4 is 25% + 50$ + 37 1/2$  is 137 1.2 $ so that is 1 and 3/8.  If they are paying attention they should be able to add those in either way easily.

Science - Energy through Systems - We are studying how the flow of energy works in the water cycle, photosynthesis and the ecosystems.  We will wrap this unit up also when we return from break.

Social Studies - The beginnins of the Revolutionary war.  Chapter 7 and Chapter 8.

HOLIDAY PARTY - December 19th from 12:00 - 2:15
Students will be asked to bring something in for the party.

December 2, 2008

I hope everyone enjoyed the Thanksgiving break and is well rested.
Thank you to all those who turned in their Science Fair projects and to all of those parents who attended the Science Fair.  Our students did a fine job and I hope they learned more about the scientific method.

Updates
In Math - We are still working on fractions decimals and percents.  Students are asked to visit the Illumination site where they can play the fraction track game and other fraction games.  I have pasted the site here:  http://illuminations.nctm.org/Activities.aspx?grade=2 as well as listed it with the links below.   Please visit these sites as they are very beneficial to your child's education.
For homework this week students need to bring in labels of items with decimals and percents on them.  They may find them in the newspapers, magazines, food labels, etc.
I hope to wrap this unit up before Christmas break.
