ALL ESOL CLASSES AT FLETCHER MIDDLE SCHOOL
Maridell Bagnal, Teacher
The Florida Department of Education determined that English Language Learners with a score of 4 or 5 on the Language Assessment Scales (LAS) test could be served best in an Intensive Reading Class for ESOL students in order to better prepare them for success on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). All ESOL students at Fletcher Middle have been scheduled in that manner.
Sixth Graders are scheduled into a double block class during first and second periods. Seventh and eighth graders have been scheduled into a double block class fifth and sixth periods. These classes include credits for both Language Arts and Intensive Reading for Enlgish Language Learners. The eighth graders go to Physical Edudation classes during the sixth period on B Day. Therefore, they have been placed in a separate Language Arts class for ELLs during third period.
Students in Intensive Reading:
Students in these classes are proficient speakers of English and are concentrating on improving reading comprehension. These students are assessed regularly in vocabulary and comprehension and then work in a variety of special reading books at different levels.
As a rule students do not have homework unless the assignment is not completed in class.
Students work in the rBook and on the computers for READ 180. They have independent reading books at their own reading level. These books can be read independently, or with the use of listening stations.
Students work at their own pace and monitor their own assignments, taking into account the availability of computers and books. Some work may be completed in small groups. Students assume responsibility for pacing themselves to accomplish all tasks and to ask for help in specific areas when they encounter difficulty.
Progress Reports will be sent home once each quarter. Parents of a student who has a passing grade at the time of the progress reports, but later falls to an unsatisfactory grade will be notified with a second progress report. Report cards will be sent at the end of every quarter.
Should you need to contact me, please call the appropriate House Administrators office and ask that I call you, or ask to schedule a conference. I look forward to working with the English Language Learners in Intensive Reading and a successful year for the ESOL program.
