Your completed IA project is due 1/29 This will be your final deadline.  NO PROJECTS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER 1/29/09 FOR ANY REASON.  I need one original and one copy.

Please read the information below:
Homework is given to strengthen and reinforce specific skills.  It will be checked for completeness and effort.  Expect to have your homework collected regularly. Late assignments will not be accepted if you are present on the due date.  If you are absent, the homework you were assigned when you were last present will be due the day you return.  You must make up assignments you miss.  It is your responsibility to ask for, and turn in, missed assignments.   You have ONE WEEK to turn in assignments due to excused absences.  NO EXCEPTIONS!  This is especially important during the 4th quarter when you will be taking A.P. and IB exams.
To be eligible for grade recovery, your homework grade must be at least 80%.

4/8 Timed Papaer 1 practice test

4/17  Timed Paper 2 practice test

4/27 Senior final

Optional review problems in your book:

Please read the information below:
If you are absent the class before a scheduled test, which is usually review day, you will take the test as scheduled.  If you are absent from the class before and/or the day of the test, you will be given a make-up test the day you return. Otherwise, it is preferable that you make arrangements to make up your work before school.

Internal Assessment
You are required by IB to do a project, also called an "Internal Assessment."  Throughout the year you will have deadlines to meet for work on your Project.  A grade for your completed project will be included in your third and fourth quarter grades. The Internal Assessment is the Project: an individual piece of work involving the collection and/or generation of data, and the analysis and evaluation of that data.  I will grade these, and those scores will count as 20% of your overall grade from IB.
Internal Assessment Deadlines
09/04/08     Form A Topic Choice
09/30/08     Introduction: Statement of Task and Plan *
                     2 copies

Help Sessions
I arrive at school each morning by 7:30 A.M.  If you have questions about your homework or test material, feel free to come by before classes start.  This is especially important if you are absent on review day.  A schedule is usually given out at Open House with a list of all teachers' extra-help times.  To be eligible for grade recovery, you must attend my help sessions regularly.

Course Description:    The course, as prescribed by the International Baccalaureate Organisation, includes the study of seven compulsory topics:  Numbers and Algebra; Sets, Logic and Probability; Geometry and Trigonometry; Statistics; Functions; Financial Mathematics; and Introductory Differential Calculus.

Core Content and Performance Standards

The student uses the language of mathematics, its symbols, notation, and graphs, to communicate; that is, the student:
Models situations geometrically to formulate and solve problems
Represents geometric curves and graphs of functions in standard coordinate systems.
Understands and uses linear functions as a mathematical representation of proportional relationships
Uses functions to analyze patterns and represent their structure.
Uses arithmetic sequences and geometric sequences and their sums, and sees these as the discrete forms of linear and exponential functions, respectively.
Solves equations symbolically, graphically, and numerically, especially linear, quadratic, and exponential equations.
Uses mathematical representations with appropriate accuracy, including numerical tables, formulas, functions, equations, charts, graphs and diagrams.
Carries out counting procedures such as those involving sets (unions and intersections) and arrangements (permutations and combinations)
Communicates logical arguments clearly, showing why a result makes sense and why the reasoning is valid.
Uses technology such as graphics calculators in carrying out complex calculations and to represent and analyze functions and their graphs.
Makes predictions by interpolating or extrapolating from given data or a given graph.

Required Course Text:
You will be using  Mathematics for the international student: Mathematical Studies SL.  Please bring it to class each day.
Required Materials:
You should have a 3-ring binder with notebook paper and dividers; pencils with erasers, and pens; and a ruler. IB requires that you take their exams in ink.  I will provide millimetre square graph paper.  You will need a calculator with trig and stat keys; the TI-83+ or 84+ are the best models for the statistics we will be doing; the TI-89 is NOT yet allowed by IB.  Throughout the year you will receive handouts and practice IB problems.  It is VERY important that you keep all of these in your notebook - especially any items printed on colored paper.

Workload and Assessment:
There is a mandatory state-wide grading scale: 100 - 90 earns an A; 89 - 80, B; 79 - 70, C; 69 - 60, D.  Your nine-weeks grade will include your test grades; a homework/classwork grade; quizzes and, in some cases, a cumulative nine-weeks test.  There will be no nine-weeks exam given during the last quarter because of the final exam.  During the 4th quarter, therefore, other grades such as homework and your classwork carry even more weight than usual - don't let SENIORITIS set in!
Student Expectations, Progress toward Standards, and Safety Nets:
The grade you receive from IB for Math Studies is based on what are referred to as External and Internal Assessments.  The External Assessment is the IB exam you will take in two parts in May, and will be 80% of your IB score.  The Internal Assessment is the Project: an individual piece of work involving the collection and/or generation of data, and the analysis and evaluation of that data.  I will grade these, and those scores will count as 20% of your overall grade from IB.

Parents can call the guidance office at 693-7593 to set up an appointment.  If you would like to speak to me on the telephone, call the main office at 693-7583 and leave a message on voice mail.

Attendance Policy
In order to earn a passing grade in a course, any student who misses more than four classes, not including school-related absences, will be required to pass a comprehensive quarter exam or project, in addition to having an overall passing grade for the quarter.
A student must be in class for at least half the period to be considered present.
It is the responsibility of sponsors supervising field trips and other school-related activities to provide a list of students who missed class for these reasons to all faculty and the attendance clerk.
Students who fail because of the attendance policy are not eligible for grade recovery.
At the end of 1st and 3rd quarter, the comprehensive exam may be given on the scheduled planning day.  This will necessitate coming to school on a "day off" to take this test.

Student Integrity and Decorum:
The purpose of discipline is to establish and maintain favorable study conditions and to develop ideals, habits and skills which make for effective citizenship and self-government.  All school rules such as, but not limited to, the dress code, policy on food, attendance, tardies, and appropriate classroom behavior will be enforced in my class.
Paxon students are expected to uphold ethical standards of academic honesty at all times. You should be familiar with the "Expectations for Ethical Behavior of Students" established by IB, regarding collusion, plagiarism and malpractice.   Cheating will result in an automatic grade of zero and a referral, and  you will be placed on probationary status.  This is especially important to keep in mind while working on your Project.
