Homework is given to strengthen and reinforce specific skills.  It will be checked for completeness and effort.  Expect to have your homework collected regularly. Late assignments will not be accepted if you are present on the due date.  If you are absent, the homework you were assigned when you were last present will be due the day you return.  You must make up assignments you miss.  It is your responsibility to ask for, and turn in, missed assignments.  
    You have ONE WEEK to turn in assignments due to excused absences.  NO EXCEPTIONS !  This is especially important during the 4th quarter when you will be taking AP and/or IB exams.

If you are absent the class before a scheduled test, which usually is a review day, you will take the test as scheduled.  If you are absent from the class before and/or the day of the test, you will be given a make-up test the day you return.  Otherwise, it is preferable that you make arrangements to make up your work before school.

Standards Based Curriculum Paper
Course:  Grade 10 – 12    Advanced Placement Statistics            Instructor:  Ms. E. Allen
Course Description:    This course, as prescribed by the College Board, includes the following major topics:  Exploring data - observing patterns and departures from data; Planning a study - deciding what and how to measure; Anticipating patterns - producing models using probability theory and simulation; and Statistical inference - confirming models.

Required Course Texts:
    Your text is The Practice of Statistics, 2nd edition.  Please bring it to class each day unless you are specifically told otherwise.  You may keep your copy of Barron's How to Prepare for the AP Statistics Advanced Placement Examination at home to use to study for tests and quizzes.

Required Materials:
You should have a 3-ring binder with notebook paper and dividers; pens and pencils (and erasers!); and you will also need graph paper and a ruler.  You will need a graphing calculator - the TI - 83+ or TI-84+ are the best models for the work that we will be doing.   Throughout the year you will receive handouts and practice AP problems.  It is VERY important that you keep all of these, as well as corrected tests and quizzes, in your notebook, especially anything printed on colored paper.

Workload and Assessment:
    There is a mandatory state-wide grading scale: 100 - 90 earns an A; 89 - 80, B; 79 - 70, C; 69 - 60, D.  Your nine-weeks grade will include your test grades; a homework/classwork grade; and quizzes. You will have a series of short or long term projects, grades for which will be included in the quarter in which they are completed. During the 4th quarter, you will have a notebook check instead of a project.  Cumulative semester exams will be given in January and May, or at a time determined by the school testing calendar.  During the 4th quarter you will be taking AP tests and will have fewer unit tests; therefore, other grades such as homework carry even more weight than usual.

Student Expectations, Progress toward Standards, and Safety Nets:
    Your AP exam will be in MAY.  As with other AP exams, you will receive a grade of 1 to 5.  Colleges usually require a score of at least 3 to give you credit or exempt you from a course.  Our course is equivalent to an Introductory Statistics or Business Statistics class.  
    If you are absent the class before a scheduled test, which usually is a review day, you will take the test as scheduled.  If you are absent from the class before and/or the day of the test, you will be given a make-up test the day you return.  Otherwise, it is preferable that you make arrangements to make up your work before school.
    I arrive at school each morning by 7:30 A.M.  If you have questions about your homework or test material, feel free to come by before classes start. A schedule is usually given out at Open House with a list of all teachers' extra-help times.
    Parents can call the guidance office at 693-7593 to set up an appointment.  If you would like to speak to me on the telephone, call the main office at 693-7583 and leave a message on voice mail, extension 146.  

Attendance Policy
    In order to earn a passing grade in a course, any student who misses more than four classes, not including school-related absences, will be required to pass a comprehensive quarter exam or project, in addition to having an overall passing grade for the quarter.
    A student must be in class for at least half the period to be considered present.
    It is the responsibility of sponsors supervising field trips and other school-related activities to provide a list of students who missed class for these reasons to all faculty and the attendance clerk.

Student Integrity and Decorum:
    The purpose of discipline is to establish and maintain favorable study conditions and to develop ideals, habits and skills, which make for effective citizenship and self-government.  All school rules such as, but not limited to, the dress code, policy on food, attendance, tardies, and appropriate classroom behavior will be enforced in my class.  Paxon students are expected to uphold ethical standards of academic honesty at all times.  Cheating will result in an automatic grade of zero.  Upon the first offense, a referral will be sent to the Dean of Students, who will issue a formal warning, with detention or other appropriate punishment being imposed.
