Below are two big assignments for the last nine weeks. Also, notification of after-school AP practice will appear at the end. Please take note:
I.The Comparison Essay – Two Works in Translation
Requirements: A study based on two of the three works studied; must
be between 1000-1500 words in length.
Aspects may include (see all charts!):
*Novelists’ techniques
*Characterization
*Portrayal of society in the literature studied
*International perspectives on common human problems:
+the world of work; ambition
+family; relationships
+life, death
+discovery; science; technology
+position; power; property
*Cross-cultural perspectives on the artist’s role in society
Structure:
*Introduction should include the aims of the assignment
*Body should reveal insight into the works and appreciation of the chosen link between the works. A variety of methods is acceptable including Socratic Dialogue, interview, or a formal development of ideas.
*Conclusion should be a brief summary and personal evaluation of the discussion or the particular achievement of the writing.
Some suggestions: [Link the aspect to the impact on the work(s) as a whole=TOTAL EFFECT]
1. A comparison of motives in the protagonists
2. The successful employment of time and/or history
3. Differences in social values and attitudes in families, classes, regions, countries
4. A comparison of setting in two works and the effect the setting has on the values, motives, actions of the characters. [Remember: setting is time, place, culture, beliefs, etc.]
5. An examination of power: oppressors, victims; users and used.
6. An examination of relationships, male/female, friends, fellow workers, etc.
7. A comparison of the part the audience plays in two dramas we’ve studied.
8. Social disputes as a result of conflict between generations
9. Human beings at the center of social tension between communal responsibilities and individual aspirations.
10. Education as a theme and a constructive part of the works read
11. An examination of the individual and his/her conscience in conflict.
12. “Comedy injected into despair.”
13. Various aspects of figurative language and effects on characterization, setting, etc.
14. Verbal or situational irony and effects on characterization, plot advancement, etc.

II. The Extended Essay--A Checklist
The Research Essay – 3500-4000 words—DUE May 30th, 2008
