Happy Mother’s Day! I hope you all bask in the love of your family on this special day. I felt loved and appreciated by the gifts you gave me this week. Thank you for the very generous gift from the whole class!
Our spelling and phonics this week will focus on th and wh digraphs. Our spelling words are there, wheel, than, whale, whimper, thought, whirl, whisper, through, and them. Our challenge words are escaped, fierce, hidden machine and swift. Our literature selection is Swimmy by Leo Lionni. A little black fish named Swimmy meets many creatures that live
in the sea and teaches them to solve problems by working together.

Math
At the website, http://www.sadlier-oxford.com/math/student_2006.cfm?grade=2, students can practice their math facts as well as the vocabulary for each math lesson. This would be a great way to practice facts!

Social Studies
We are learning about maps.
Help Wanted
On Friday afternoon at 12:40, I would like to have Spontaneous problem solving as we did for Odyssey of the Mind. TO do this I need several helpers. If you are available please let me know. Email: mcelweee@ollmelbourne.org (Yes, three e’s at the end of my name.)
Story Telling
The children are so excited to tell us a story. Please help your child be prepared to tell their story on their assigned day. Remember these are NOT to be stories your child made up but a story they heard or read somewhere. The rubric for this is on the website .www.ollmelbourne.org Follow the link to second grade weekly updates.
Story Telling Assignment
During the week of May 12, each child will be asked to tell a story to the class. This should be a story they heard or read. It can be a fairy tale or any other story. Stories are to be told not read. The rubric for a grade on this is on the other side of this paper. The due dates for the story are as follows: Monday, May 12; Holly, Marlene, Kimberly, Melissa, and Deven.
Tuesday: Colin, Christian M., Emily, Sarah, Val, and Liam. Wednesday: Connor, Eric, Branden, Cristian F. Patrick and Luisa. Thursday: Anthony, Josh, Madison, Matthew and Sean. This helps your child learn to present him/herself and to follow a story beginning, middle and end. Please help your child prepare for this.
