Here is the supply list and the summer reading list for next year. 6th Grade
Students are required to have the following supplies with them for class every day. Failure to have the required supplies disrupts the class and interferes with learning and will therefore result in a demerit.
Backpacks are requested rather than duffel bags or bags on wheels due to the size and storage space available.
„^ 5 packages of loose leaf paper (3 will go to the teacher)
„^ Black and blue pens
„^ Red pens for correcting
„^ Pencils, #2 (mechanical pencil with extra lead)
„^ Pencil erasers
„^ Highlighters (2)
„^ Pen/pencil bag (zippered)
„^ 7 composition notebooks
„^ 5 pocket folders
„^ 100 - 3 x 5 lined index cards
„^ Soft cover English dictionary
No electronic dictionaries.
Paperback books may need to be purchased during the school year.
Supplies to be given to the teacher at the beginning of the year:
„^ 2 reams of computer paper
„^ Hand sanitizer
„^ 2 boxes of tissues
We suggest stretch fabric covers for the textbooks (size medium or large). Please be aware that some of the supplies (paper and pens) do need to be replaced as the school year goes on.

This summer incoming 6th grade students are required to read two books. They must read ˇ§The Wandererˇ¨ by Sharon Creech and any biography or autobiography (5th grade level or higher) of their choice. Below are instructions for the project associated with each book.
In addition, during the school year we will be reading ˇ§A Wrinkle in Timeˇ¨ by Madeleine Lˇ¦Engle and ˇ§Tangerineˇ¨ by Edward Bloor. If you want to purchase these books with your other supplies I will keep them in the classroom until we need them. You can also wait and borrow them from the public library when it is necessary
After reading ˇ§The Wandererˇ¨ please complete the following questions. The answers must be handwritten (cursive), in complete sentences and in pen:
1. Where will Sophie and the crew of The Wanderer go on their journey, and how long will the trip take?
2. Describe some of the challenges on board the ship, such as cooking, eating, sleeping, and keeping watch. How do the sea and weather affect these simple tasks?
3. What is ˇ§the terrible dreamˇ¨ Sophie dreams at night?
4. What is Sophieˇ¦s story?
5. Compare Codyˇ¦s and Brianˇ¦s attitudes toward Sophie. What do their attitudes reveal about their personalities?
6. Explain why Sophie says, ˇ§The sea, the sea, the sea. It rolls and rolls and calls to me. Come in, it says, come in,ˇ¨ and then later awakens from a dream, thinking, ˇ§I hate the sea and the sea hates me.ˇ¨
7. Each character chooses to teach a lesson on board the ship that eventually helps each or all of the crew members. What skill would you choose to teach, and how might it help others on the voyage?
8. Sophie describes the ocean as ˇ§having many sides like me.ˇ¨ How is Sophie like the ocean?
9. Each of the main characters in the novel changes as a result of the journey. Choose two or more characters and give specific examples of how they change.
10. Compare and contrast Codyˇ¦s relationship with his father at the beginning and at the end of the novel.
11. Names are very important in this story, and often the origin of a characterˇ¦s name is explained. Choose two of the characters and design new names for them. Explain your choices.
12. Although the novel had a positive, uplifting ending, Rosalie leaves for Spain, and Uncle Dock continues to pine for her. Why do you think the author separates these two characters? Would you have ended Dockˇ¦s story this way? Why or why not?
13. Do you think The Wanderer is a good title for this novel? Why or why not?
After reading the biography or autobiography make a poster (22ˇ¨ x 28ˇ¨) which includes:
Have a great summer. See you on Passport Day on August 13th
