Welcome to 8th Grade Science.

You will have many opportunities for learning. You will gain a strong understanding of key scientific principles and topics. Learn how to use mathematics to tackle scientific problems, find out about latest technologies and use many of them to learn more about science and our world. You will also see how science relates to other disciplines. Prepare for the science FCAT. Develop thinking skills and the ability to challenge assumptions, think creatively, and solve real-life problems and have fun.

Your science grades are based on:

  • Homework: 20%
  • Quizzes and Tests: 40%
  • Projects10%
  • Class work,notebook, labs and Participation: 30%

Supplies for Class:

  • 3-subjects spiral notebook
  • composition book (for science project)
  • 4 Duotang folders (one per quarter)
  • One 3 rings binder (Keep at home)
  • pack of index cards
  • pencil, pens.

8/20-Wednesday:All Classes

  • Classroom Procedures
  • HW:Get all forms sign and return them to your teacher.

8/21-Thursday:All Classes

  • CW- Science Safety
  • HW: Use symbols and the diagram sheet provided to create your Bioglyph. Write a Bio Poem about yourself.

8/22-Friday: All Classes

  • Science Safety
  • HW- Get Safety Consigned by your parent

8/25-Monday: All Classes

  • CW-Science Safety Review- Periods 1,2 &4)
  • Gifted Science (Period 5,6)Laboratory Activity: What is the configuration (design) of the inside of a closed container(OBSCERTAINER)?-
  • HW (All periods)- Answer the following questions in your spiral notebook:
    1. What is science? (Define)
    2. Explain why science is important.
    3. List at least 5 areas of science(ex. Biology and define each area)
    4. List an amazing but true science fact.
    5. List a recent advancement in science
    6. Explain how science affect your everyday life. (Give examples)

8/27-Wednesday: All Classes

Classwork:

  • Types of Scientists
  • Notes on Science Process Skills

Homwork:

Science Poster ActivityUse the answers from Monday's HW to create a poster.

  • Your poster must have the following:center- definition of science , top left- Why is science important, lower left-Amazing but true fact, top right-Areas of Science, lower right-Recent Advancement in science. Be creative, also include diagrams.

8/28-Thursday: All Classes

  • Classwork:
    • Science Process Skills (notes)
    • Water Cohesion (notes)
    • Lab Activity: Drops on a penny( Water Cohension)
  • Homework:
    • Create a bar graph with your average, your partner's average as the independent variable and the number of drops as the dependent variable.
    • Answer the Analysis questions.
  • 8/29 - Friday: All Classes

Class Activity:

  • Drops on a Penny (Period 1,2,4)
  • Paper Clip in a cup (Period 5,6)

Homework:

Periods 1,2,4:

  • Read Pages 9-11 in your text book then describe the  jobs of a) Geochemist, b) Ecologist, c) Volcanologist, d) Science illustrator. (Do this in your spiral notebook)

Periods 5,6:

  • Worksheet: Using Science Skills/Scientific Method

Tuesday 9/02:
