11/15/07
This week we finished listening to a recording of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street," a teleplay that was first shown on The Twilight Zone in 1960. Students will read the various characters' parts tomorrow.

This week we also did exercises related to the vocabulary in the teleplay and completed Grammar and Writing Workbook pages related to subjects and predicates.

Week of 10/29/07

We will begin the week with a PowerPoint presentation on poetry and will review simile, metaphor, and personification. Later in the week we will be reviewing the elements of fiction.

Test on Quarter I vocabulary will be Thursday, 11/1.
Prepare for the test by studying all "Words to Know" from the selections "Seventh Grade," "Dirk the Protector," "Names/Nombres," and "Amigo Brothers."

Week of 10/22/07

My  site on Schoolnotes has not been accessible for several weeks. I am hopeful that the problem has been fixed.

The quarter ends this week. All make-up work must be completed by Wednesday, 10/24. Friday, 10/26, is a teacher work day.

This week we will return to PowerEd--Prewriting. We will complete worksheets on Evaluating the Prompt, Writing a Thesis Statement, and Incorporating Character Traits.

We will continue discussing pronouns and antecedents.

We will review vocabulary from four selections read this quarter: "Seventh Grade," "Dirk the Protector," "Names/Nombres," and "Amigo Brothers." A vocabulary test will be given late this week or early next week.

We will review elements of fiction (character, setting, conflict/plot,and theme) in preparation for a quiz.

Time willing, we will discuss cinquain poetry and write a cinquain.


Week of 10/1/07

This week we will discuss prewriting. We will complete a worksheet and write a thesis statement.
On Tuesday we will have an open-book quiz on "Names/Nombres." Later in the week we will have a quiz on the vocabulary from that selection.

We will begin reading "Amigo Brothers" and will discuss conflict and plot in the short story.
Please make sure that your Interactive Readers and your Grammar/Writing workbooks are in class.

Week of 9/24/07

Interactive Readers must be in class this week.
Grammar/Writing workbooks should be brought back to class no later than 9/26.

We will continue our discussion of the five-paragraph essay format. We will begin discussing prewriting and will learn to evaluate a writing prompt.

We will read "Names/Nombres" in the Interactive Reader and do activities related to the vocabulary and to the author's purpose.

The idioms/slang quiz was postponed last week and is now scheduled for 9/25/07.

Week of 9/17/07
Journal-writing and skill-building exercises throughout the week.
9/17
Today we will fihnish reading "Dirk the Protector" in class and review the vocabulary sentences written for homework.
We will discuss the setting, the main idea, and the theme of the story and create a story web.

Remainder of Week:
Character web for narrator of "Dirk the Protector."
Idiom exercises.
Noun/pronoun practice.


Introduction to five-paragraph essay.
Hand out outline for five-paragraph essay.
Grammar Blast.

Powerpoint Presentation: Prewriting.
Work sheet on evaluating a prompt.
Review idioms/slang for quiz.

Quiz on idioms and slang will be next week.

9/11/07

Homework 9/11:
Literature text, page 27, vocabulary exercises (1-10)

Prepare for 9/12 quiz on "Seventh Grade"

On 9/14 we will read "Dirk the Protector" (page 143 in the literature text) in class.

Homework 9/14:
Define the following words and then use each in a sentence: brindled, cohorts, conventional, impasse, predatory

Week of 9/4/07
This week students are being issued both literature and grammar/writing textbooks. They will also receive  workbooks to accompany both texts.

The week begins with a diagnostic expository essay.

Students will do exercises on nouns in the grammar workbook and will review the writing process and traits of good writing in preparation for a quiz.

We will read and discuss the short story "Seventh Grade."

I will be checking the contents of the binders/notebooks this weekend. Students must prepare their binders and leave them in class on Friday.

Week of 8/27/07

This week we will be discussing the steps of the writing process and the six traits of good writing. We will also discuss expository writing, and the class will produce a list of possible topics. We will then focus on the prewriting stage of the writing process.

We will have daily journal topics for our warm-up exercises this week.

Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to our beautiful new school! I am looking forward to a wonderful school year.

Suggested supplies for Language Arts 7C are as follows:
pencils and black or blue pens
loose-leaf paper
three-ring binder with four dividers
folder with pockets and three holes to fit binder

This week we will discuss class rules and procedures. A copy of the rules and procedures will be sent home during the week. It should be signed by both student and parent/guardian and then placed in the student's language arts binder.

This year every student in the school will be reading daily for twenty minutes. Please be sure to bring a book to class for Silent Reading.

Agendas will be distributed on Monday. Students should copy the daily agenda and homework into their personal agendas every day.
