Summer Reading Assignments: Students must read ALL of the following three books over the summer. All these books are available to order NEW at the major chain bookstores, and also can be ordered USED – ONLINE - for MUCH CHEAPER!
Achebe, Chinua. Things Fall Apart.
Davis, Kenneth. Don’t Know Much About Geography: Everything You Need to Know About Geography But Never Learned.
Menchu, Rigoberta. I, Rigoberta Menchu: An Indian Woman in Guatemala.
Upon returning to school in August, students will do in-class writing assignments to test their knowledge of the three books; further, they will be tested on Don’t Know Much About Geography.
Summer Scrapbooking Assignment: Students must create a scrapbook of world current events. For each week of summer vacation, students must find one news article from outside of this hemisphere (i.e., Asia, India, Africa, The Middle East, Europe, and Oceania). Articles must be clipped out or printed out and placed in the scrapbook, along with a paragraph-long summary written by the student (by hand, not typed) on the article. The articles must be on culture, politics, war, environment, and geography of the country. By the beginning of school, students should have AT LEAST 10 ENTRIES in their scrapbooks. TURN IN TO MS. PORTER FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL.
