2008-2009
COURSE DESCRIPTION
M/J Mathematics 2 and Mathematics 2Adv. are designed to develop the students fundamental skills and concepts necessary for the study of higher mathematics. It includes a review of the arithmetic operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals and integers. Then it continues with the study and the uses of rational numbers, ratios and proportions, percents, measurements, geometry and graphing. It will emphasize problem solving, mathematical reasoning, and knowledge of the use of calculators and computers in preparation for the FCAT.
Geometry Honors is a high school accredited course designed to develop the geometric relationships and deductive strategies that can be used to solve a variety of real world and mathematical problems. The content will include but not be limited to:
• Geometric constructions
• Fundamental properties of geometry and its terminology
• Deductive and inductive reasoning as it applies to proofs
• Formulas of plane/solid geometry and properties of circles
• Coordinate geometry and transformations on the plane
• Geometric relationships (parallelism, perpendicularity, congruence, and similarity)
• Introduction to trigonometry
STANDARD DISTRICT GRADING SCALE
A (3.5 +) 90% - 100% Outstanding
B (2.5 +) 80% - 89% Good
C (1.5 +) 70% - 79% Satisfactory
D (1.0 +) 60% - 69% Minimal
F (.99 -) 0% - 59% Unsatisfactory
GRADE REQUIREMENTS
1. Notebook: A notebook is required. There should be four separate sections for notes, homework assignments, quiz/test corrections, and ASMUD problems. Every sheet should be headed with your name, date, period, and page number (when applicable). The notebook will be checked periodically and will count as a test grade.
2. Home Learning: Homework is a major part of the overall grade. It is assigned daily and checked the following day in class. It may be checked for a grade or for completion (effort grade).
In order to receive full credit for a homework assignment, the student must:
a) Copy the problems completely as they appear in the text.
b) Show all work next to or beneath the problem
c) Complete the entire assignment.
d) Have the homework on top of your desk, ready to be checked when the bell rings.
e) Work must be neat, organized, and written in pencil or erasable ink only.
If the assignment cannot be turned in due to a family matter, a note must accompany the student on that day.
3. Class Assignments: Class work is assigned after each daily lesson. Sometimesclass work will be finished in class and checked if times allows. Otherwise, it should be finished at home and graded as homework the following day.
4. Quizzes: Quizzes are given weekly and are not always announced in advance.
5. Unit Tests: Tests are given at the end of each unit (chapter) and are always announced well in advance.
6. Absenteeism: It is the student’s responsibility to get all missed assignments when absent.
All homework is written on the sideboard, and remains there for approximately a week. While absent you should make every effort to contact another student in class to get the work missed. This way you can keep up with the class and may have questions, which will help you when making up the assignments.
7. Fieldtrips: Students going on a fieldtrip or attending in-house activities are responsible for getting assignments prior to the activity. They are expected to have the work upon their return to class.
8. Average: Homework (worth one grade), quizzes (worth three grades), unit tests (worth five grades), and notebook (worth five grades) are added and divided by the number of grades in order to obtain the students nine-weeks grade. The number of grades for each may vary so that the HW will count approximately 35% and Quiz/Test will count approx. 65% of the 9wks academic grade.
9. Materials: Students need to bring their notebooks to class daily, plenty of lined paper, a pencil or erasable pen, a color (red preferably) pencil, and a ruler. A protractor and calculator will be used later in the year and will be announced prior to their use.
