              New Updates: (tons of them!)

The Giver test has been postponed until Wed. 10/8.  Students should be sure to bring their books and at least 2 sheets of lined paper for the test, which is essay style and open book.  They will test on Wednesday and Friday.

"Good Graffiti" is due Tuesday, Oct. 14.  Email me with any questions you may have.  All students brought home the assignment on Thursday, Oct.2.

PLEASE CHECK OUT ADOPTACLASSROOM.COM for my new request page.  Given the recent budget shortages, Ms. Leal has asked all of us to sign up for "adoption".  I hope you can help in some small way.  THANKS SO MUCH TO THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE "ADOPTED" MY CLASS! The supplies that I purchase will come in very handy! To show my gratitude, I will not require children of donors to purchase any novels for the rest of this year.  I will provide copies to them without further cost to you. Again, thanks so much!

46 students attended last week's Author's Night.  That was more students than all of the other Language Arts classes combined! Woo-Hoo!

A NEW NOVEL ASSIGNMENT HAS BEEN MADE! Your children will be selecting one CLASSIC CHILDREN'S NOVEL to read.  A project assignment to go along with the novels will be sent home next week. Some of the novels are available in the school bookstore. If your child has read all of these books, you are free to select a different title with him/her. Email me with any questions or if you need any more suggestions.  The students must share the title and author of choice to me by Friday 10/10.  They must acquire the novel by Friday 10/17. I have many novels for them to borrow.

A classic novel is a novel published at least 50 years ago. Please be sure to chose books that are appropriate for children to read, if you stray from the list. I prefer your child reads a book that he/she has not read before. There are hundreds of titles out there!  Maybe your child would like to read an old book you loved when you were in middle school?????

Treasure Island (Stevenson) $4.75
Secret Garden (Burnett) $6.40
The Hobbit (Tolkien) $8.55
The Red Pony (Steinbeck) $??? (about $10)
Around the World in 80 Days (Verne) $10.70 -serves as extra credit for Mrs. Dellacamera's class also.  This book is hard to read!

FCAT EXPLORER information was handed out to your children on Friday.  There is no specific assignment they must complete.  We will work with the program in class on occassion, and you are free to ask your child to work on reading skills via fcat explorer at any time.  I will pull up score reports every once in a while to check on students' progress.

Check your child's composition book to see what we've been up to. (And be sure to ask them why if it seems rather empty!)
