ALGEBRA - Please note that the BEST way to learn math is to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!! The ANSWERS to ODD problems can be found in the back of the book. Please encourage your child to try some of these problems for "extra" practice at home. STUDENT's: Don't forget to W.O.P, W.O.P. and C.A.P.:)
READING - Reading at home should always be encouraged!
1st & 2nd marking periods will concentrate on STUDY SKILLS and indivdualized SPECIFIC SKILLS (main idea, drawing conclusions, using context, locating answers...)
MARKING PERIOD II -
ALGEBRA I - will be focusing on WORKING OUT all equation problems and CHECKING for accuracy. Parents please check your child's work to see that assignments are being kept up to date..In addition, students will be expected to perform "DO NOWS" (refresher Math
skills)
READING - ALL reading classes will continue with Learning Strategies/Study Skills for this MP. High School students will continue to work independently on Specific Skills. Middle School students will begin reading novels. We will be reading THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER and HUCKLEBERRY FINN.
MARKING PERIOD III -
ALGEBRA I -Continuous review from beginning of book. PARENTS please see that your child pratices REGULLARY!! Again, odd problems show answers in the back of the book. Check their progress and most importantly, check their homework is complete (homework is assigned DAILY.) & "DO NOWS"
READING - 2 (two) book reports are due this MP -1/31 and 3/27. This course encourages reading OUTSIDE of the classroom. PLEASE NOTE: Change in course procedure--ALL reading students will be reading SILENTLY for 20 min. EVERYDAY and Wednesday's we will be used for newspaper review. The second half of reading class for ALL High School students will concentrate on the BE A BETTER READER "basic skills" program.
MARKING PERIOD IV - ALGEBRA I - will continue through to Chapter 8in Textbook. Please remember to REVIEW, REVIEW, REVIEW. There is a constant need to review all past math/algebra skills covered throughout the year and in the summer.
READING - Again all students will continue to read silently for 20 min. at the beginning of each class. In addition, throughout this marking period MIDDLE SCHOOL students will move on to the "9 GOOD HABITS" FOR ALL READERS. HIGH SCHOOL students will be reviewing, using BEYOND BASICS text, all basic literacy skills, i.e., Main Idea, Sequencing, Fact & Opinion, Plot, Point of View, etc.
Book Reports are due: Wed., April 30 & Wed., May 21
