Applying for Federal Aid—File Electronically for Faster Results
If you’re planning on attending college next year, one of the biggest items on your to-do list should be filing for federal financial aid. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is your red carpet to a financial aid award, helping you achieve your educational goals by simply filling out the application. Although the government accepts applications through June 30, 2009, for the 2008-09 academic year, the earlier you submit your application, the faster you’ll know how much money you have to work with.
Major Benefits of the FAFSA
The FAFSA has been available on the Web for a couple of years now, but many students are still hesitant to apply for financial aid online. However, most students don’t know the three benefits to filing your application electronically:
1. Electronic filing is faster than filing a paper form. The process may be as many as seven to fourteen days faster if you electronically sign your application as soon as you complete it. Submitting your application using FAFSA on the Web eliminates the frustrating delays that can occur through the mail.
2. FAFSA on the Web edits your application before you transmit it. This ensures that the data you transmit to the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) is ready to be processed. By filing and signing electronically, you decrease your chances of hearing back from the DOE that you forgot to include one thing or another, which can further delay your application.
3. You can check the status of your electronic application in three days. After you submit your application, you don’t have to wait and wait for results. If you print out an application and mail it in, then it can take up to three weeks to find out where your application is in the financial aid decision-making process!
So How Does Electronic Filing Work?
To fill out the FAFSA online, go to the FAFSA Web site. With the online application, you can get help for each page of the application directly from the Web site, access worksheets that automatically calculate and enter information for you, and save your application at any time. In addition, you have the opportunity to complete it at a later date. And don’t worry—the online application uses encryption software to protect your information.
Once you have filled out your application, you sign and submit it electronically. However, before you do, you must request a PIN—the code that you need to sign your FAFSA on the Web electronically. (It’s similar to the PIN you use to access your bank account.) To protect the privacy of the information you are submitting on this form, you should keep your PIN a secret.
When you have your PIN, follow these seven steps
Step
1: Go to the FAFSA Web site.
Step
2: Select the "Provide Electronic Signature" option under the "Filling Out a FAFSA" section.
Step
3: Select the school year of the application you want to sign.
Step
4: Confirm your identity by providing your Social Security number, the first two letters of your last name, your date of birth, and your PIN number.
Step
5: Indicate if you are signing as a parent or a student.
Step
6: If you are signing as a parent, then enter the necessary information about the student.
Step
7: If you do not receive a confirmation page and number at the end of the process, then the Department of Education has NOT received your electronic signature.
Filling Out the FAFSA on Paper
If you don’t have regular access to a computer or just don’t feel comfortable submitting information about yourself over the Internet, the U.S. government still accepts paper applications. The amount of money you qualify for won’t be any different if you apply the old-fashioned way. However, it may just take a little longer to get your application through the process. You can either download a copy of the paper application or pick up a copy at CAP Office in room 4120.
