   GRADE 6: The First Israelites
The Early Israelites built their kingdom in Canaan, along the Mediterranean Sea in SW Asia.  They were monotheistic.  Their faith became known as Judaism which influenced Christianity and Islam.
Their language was Hebrew and believed that they were descendants of Abraham.
Jacob, Abraham's grandson, raised 12 sons in Canaan and their families became the 12 tribes of Israel.  They suffered drought in Canaan and went to Egypt to survive where they became slaves of the Pharaoh.  They were eventually liberated by Moses and lead into the promised land.   But Moses died before getting there and Joshua became their leader.
Names to know: Abraham, Jacob, Moses,Joshua,Samuel, Saul, David, Solomon.
David drove the Philistines out and conquered other lands. Those conquered had to pay tribute to David.  The taxes were high and the people were burdened.  After David's death, his son Solomon came to power.  He built the stone temple in Jerusalem which his father had wanted so that the Israelites would have a permanent place for their sacred religion.
But after creating the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah, many Israelites forgot their religion and were told by the prophets to return to God's laws.  The Kingdom of Israel and Judah were threatened by the Assyrians and the Chaldeans.  The Israelites lost their religion and 10 of the tribes were scattered through their empires.
The Assyrians were called Samaritans because they settled around Samaria and they feared God.  They offered sacrifices to God and began following following the Israelites' religion.
The Egyptians conquered Judah and were in turn conquered by the Chaldeans.  The Jews joined the Egyptians to conquer the Chaldeans.
Nebuchadnezzar captured Jerusalem and punished the Jews by sending many to Babylon and appointing a new Jewish king.
The Jews revolted against the Chaldeans and the Chaldean ruler crushed Jerusalem.  He took the king and thousands of Jews to Babylon.  This period is known as the Babylonian Captivity.
When Cyrus  became King of Persia, he allowed the Jews to return to Judah.
The Jews celebrated the Sabbath, they went to the synagogue, prayed and discussed their religion.
Judah became under the control of Alexander the Great in 331B.C. He introduced the Greek language to the Jews in Judah.  But a priest named Judas Maccabeus and his followers formed an army and drove the Greeks out of Judah and disposed of the statues of their gods and goddesses.
The Romans conquered Judah in 63 B.C. and renamed it Judeah.  The Roman king was Herod and was very cruel to the Jews.  After his death, the Romans replaced Jewish Kings with Roman officials.  The Jews by now had gone in different groups.  Some of these groups were:  Pharisees,  Sadducees, Essenes, and Zealots The Sadducees did not agree with the teaching of the Pharisees.  Because the Jews were split into groups they became powerless after the death of Herod.
The Zealots hated the Romans and wanted to fight them.  They eventually revolted against them in A.D. 66 and drove the Romans out of Jerusalem.  Their victory was short lived as the Romans regained control four years later killing thousands of Jews and destroying the Temple in Jerusalem which remains today is known as the Wailing Wall.  The Jews revolted again but they were stopped by the Romans.  The Romans forbade them to visit Jerusalem and gave Judah the name of Palestine.
In A.D. 1948 Palestine was divided and a new Jewish nation called Israel was created.

GR 7 Geography:  . Learning cultural diversity can help us understand people and cultures in our world.  We need to understand how things are connected using spatial perspective.

What is culture and who shares it?  What is Acculturation?
What is Ethnocentrism, Multicultural?  Why do we have cultural differences?
We share the same basic needs for food, water, clothing and shelter.  So, why are we different?
How do we define economics?   What is GNP, GDP and how is the GDP divided?  What is the difference between developing countries,  developed countries, and Third-world countries?  How do we determine the literacy rate?
What are the different types of economies?  How do we determine the birth and death rate?  What is migration?  What is the difference between an Emigrant and a Immigrant?
How can we describe globalization?
Why do we take in refugees and how can we stop the famine world wide?
