READING 6 ASSIGNMENTS:  FOURTH QUARTER
Here are journal entries 11-20
11. BEST GIFT/BEST PARTY
What is the best gift that you ever received? Why was it so perfect for you? What made it stand out in your mind as being so important?

All of you have attended different types of parties, formal or informal, parties with friends, relatives, or outsiders whom you did not know. What was the best party you can remember? Why was this party so comforting and fun? Next, describe a party where you felt uncomfortable and ill at ease. What was the difference between these two occasions?

12. ONE DAY OF YOUR LIFE
Ethan asks the "Souls", "If you could live one day of your life all over again, what day would it be and why?" Answer this question with as much detail as possible.

13. DID YOU ASK ME?
Write an invitation to a tea party. Consider the information, format, and style of an invitation, including "w" questions- who, what, when, where, and why.

14. HIDE AND SEEK

In life, people see the same event but each person comes to his or her own conclusion about what really happened. This is true in fiction as well. In the following activity, choose to analyze one of four separate events listed. For the event you choose, answer a set of questions pertaining to the event. As Nadia and Ethan found, write a different interpretation of what really happened.

These are the events from which to choose:
a. Ethan and Nadia attend the "Phantom of the Opera"
b. Nadia hangs back on the beach while Ethan waits for her to catch up.

These are the questions to answer based on the event chosen above:
1. Who is the first narrator of the event? What details does this storyteller give as to what occurred?
2. What is the attitude of this first narrator of this same event?
3. Who is the second narrator of this same event?
4. What additional details about the event does this second narrator provide?
5. What details does this second narrator leave out?
6. What new insights do you gain from the second narrator's account?
7. Which telling did you like better, the first or the second narrator's? Explain.

15. THE NAME'S THE GAME
Here are some examples of the allusions within the story:
1. Tillie Nachman names her cat T.S. The author is alluding to what famous poet with this name? (Chapter 1)
2. The author alludes to “A Mad Tea Party" from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. How does the scene fit this allusion? (Chapter 3)
3. Chapter 17 of “The First Book of Samuel" in the Old Testament tells the story of how David vanquished the Philistine warrior, Goliath, with a slingshot. To which characters is the author referring when she names David and Goliath? Why does the author employ this allusion? (Chapter 6)

16. YOU'RE THE ONE
Mrs. Olinski never has the perfect response to the question of why she chose the "Souls" to be her team to the Academic Bowl. She knows why she did not choose Ham, but not why she chose Noah, Nadia, Ethan, and especially Julian. At the end of the novel she asks the "Souls", "Did I choose you or did you choose me?" The "Souls" respond, "Yes!" What does this answer mean? How does this answer help readers understand what the characters gained from this experience? Come up with suggestions for Mrs. Olinski on how might she answer this question in the future if ever asked to how she chose this amazing team.

17. GENERATION X, Y, AND Z, ...
Every generation looks to the next generation and sighs at the thought that the world will once again change for the worse. In this novel, three adults suggest that the new generation is bringing about the "decline of Western Civilization". Do you agree or disagree? Answer the following questions based on this remark and see if your responses support or negate the adults' position on this query.

1. Noah's mom says that the decline is occurring because kids don't write their Bread & Butter letters anymore. Why is a B&B so important to her?
2. Tillie Nachman thinks that the invention of a ballpoint pen was at the heart of the society's downfall. How does the pen reflect upon the declining world?
3. Mrs. Olinski thinks that the lack of teatime at 4:00 p.m. has harmed the world. What does she mean?
4. Do these three women have a point? Is the society falling into a downward spiral? Explain your response.
5. In what ways do the characters of Noah, Nadia, and Ethan, Julian as individuals and as a team contradict the view that the world is declining? Give examples of their experiences to back up your response,
6. Give examples of the civil behavior that is commonplace in today's society. How important do you think these actions are? What does your generation need to do to convince today's adult generation that Western Civilization is not declining. Explain.

18. MY TOWN
This story takes place in the town of Epiphany in New York. First define the word epiphany. Why did Konigsburg choose this name for the town and middle school? What do you think that the town symbolizes? (A symbol is a person, place, event, or object that has meaning in itself, but suggests other meanings as well.) Was it a good choice or bad? Explain. In what ways does the word epiphany, relate to the characters in the story? How was the moment of winning over Maxwell like an epiphany for the "Souls"?

19. TWENTY YEARS FROM NOW
To the best of your ability, describe where you think you will be and what you will be doing twenty years from now. Add as much detail as possible. Take this as seriously as you can. The doors of the world are open to you.

20. THEME: FRIENDSHIP
One of the themes that arises in this novel is that of friendship. What makes a good friendship? Why do people become friends? Why do some friendships come and go and others last a life time?
