May Writing Unit of Study- Writing All About Books with Big Umbrella Topics to Teach Others
In this unit of study, students will write all about books on topics that they already know a lot about. Author, Lucy Calkins, describes the purpose of the nonfiction unit. She says,"It hardly needs noting that immersing children in nonfiction writing is crucial for them to be able to communicate the truth as they see it about their world. It is crucial toofor them to write in these genres in order for them to be able to understand what they read in these genres. From a Writer's point of view, they will understand the unique features of the genre, both in terms of text structures and in terms of authority, perspective, and voice."

Looking for a way to help your student practice the spelling words? Go to the Spelling City! The address is located at the bottom of our webpage. As part of the practice, have your student type in the words from the weekly spelling list.

Readers Read Nonfiction-May Reading Unit of Study
During this unit of study, the students will:
*negotiate content based nonfiction reading
*develop ideas about their topics
*have conversations across books about their topic
*use strategies to continue conversation
Parents-MBES school policy requires that planners be signed daily.
Please check over and sign your student's homework. This practice will allow you to see what your child is learning in the classroom and ensure that your child is producing quality homework.
*Mark your calendar for Wednesday, May 21st. Parents/guardians are invited to join their student for a workshop on Summer Reading. Our workshop will begin at 8:00 a.m., so please be prompt. This is an instructional workshop; no siblings please.
*Many of our classroom library books are missing. Since the county did not fund or provide us with our library (money was provided by: Adopt-a-Class, A+ Money, Referendum Dollars, and myself), it has taken a lot of time to accumulate the books. Please have your child do a careful check of their room and backpack for any missing books.
