Students will work on summarizing, paraphrasing, author's purpose and source credibility. We will also work on charts, tables, and graphs.

Week of Feb. 19:

Students will work on summarizing, paraphrasing, author's purpose and source credibility.

We will continue reading Tangerine.

Interims will go out on Friday.



Week of Feb. 11:

Students will work on fact and opinion, author's purpose, propaganda, and inference. Library books that were checked out when we went to the library are due Wednesday.

Test on Tangerine on Friday.
Vocabulary test on Friday.



Week of Feb. 4:

Students will continue to work on FCAT practice.Students will get a new set of vocabulary words on Monday and have a test in two weeks. We will start reading the book Tangerine this week.


Week of Jan. 28:

Students will once again take the Scholastic Achievement Inventory(SRI)this week. The inventory is a way to assess student reading levels.

We will also go to the library this week. Students are to bring a library book, or a book from home, to read in class.  

Students will also continue to work on FCAT practice.

Vocabulary test on Friday.



Week of Jan. 21:

Welcome to Reading. Students were given a paper to take home describing expectations, extra credit, class rules, etc.

Supplies:
- hard cover binder (minimum 1 inch)
- 1 folder (with brads)
- notebook paper
- blue or black pen and/or pencil
- ream of copy paper (optional)

This week students will be given tips for taking the FCAT and will take a reading pre-test.



Week of Jan. 7:

Students will once again take the MAZE test this week.We will study test taking skills this week- tips for multiple choice items, essay questions, etc.. We will review main idea, cause and effect, titles, subtitles, charts, graphs, and sequence of a text.

Students will also continue to read Tangerine.


Week of Jan. 3:

We continue to study non-fiction. We will study main idea, cause and effect, titles, subtitles, charts, graphs, and sequence of a text.

Students will also continue to read Tangerine.


Week of Dec. 17:

We will have no new vocabulary words this week but we will review past vocabulary words. We continue to study non-fiction. We will study propaganda, cause and effect, titles, subtitles, charts, graphs, and sequence of a text.

Students will also continue to read Tangerine.

Any missed assignments (except for assignments due to absences this week)must be turned in by Dec. 19.They will not be accepted in January.


Week of Dec. 10:

We continue to study non-fiction. We will study propaganda, cause and effect, titles, subtitles, charts, graphs, and sequence of a text.

Students will also continue to read Tangerine.

Week of Dec. 3:

Week of Nov. 4:

We continue to study non-fiction. We will study titles, subtitles, charts, graphs, and sequence of a text.

Report cards will be distributed on Tuesday.

Week of Oct. 29:

We will begin to study non-fiction. We will study titles, subtitles, charts, graphs, and sequence of a text.

Students will take the SRI test on Tuesday.

Students will also continue to read Tangerine.



Week of Oct. 22:

We will continue to study fiction. We will study different genres- mystery, science fiction, poems, etc.We will continue to study plot, setting, characters, theme, compare/contrast, conflict, point of view, and irony.

Students will also continue to read Tangerine.

Wednesday is the last day of the nine weeks.

Vocabulary test on Friday.



Week of Oct. 15:

We will continue to study fiction. We will be studying short stories, plot, setting, characters, theme, compare/contrast, conflict, point of view, and irony.

Students will also continue to read Tangerine.

Wednesday is the last day students may turn in extra credit.



Week of Oct. 8:

We will start our unit on fiction. We will be studying plot, setting, characters, theme, compare/contrast, conflict, point of view, and irony.

Students will also continue to read
Tangerine.

Vocabulary test on Friday.


Week of Oct. 1:  
Students will continue to work on cause/effect and reading comprehension, main idea, inferences, and fact and opinion. They will also continue to read
Tangerine.

Students should bring a book from home or a library book to class every day.

Test on Friday on comprehension.

Week of Sept. 24:On Tuesday students will take the Maze Test, a six minute reading test.

Students will continue to work on cause/effect and reading comprehension. They will also continue to read Tangerine.

Students should bring a book from home or a library book to class every day.

Vocabulary quiz on Friday.



Week of Sept. 17:

Students will work on cause/effect, finding main idea, recalling facts, summarizing, inferences, and author's approach. We will continue to read Tangerine. We will go to the library for an orientation and students are expected to check out a book, and bring it to class everyday, for independent reading.

Quiz on Tangerine on Friday.


Week of Sept. 10:
Students will be working on pre-reading and comprehension strategies, main idea, and relevant details for several weeks.
We will also be reading Tangerine.

Vocabulary quiz on Friday.


Week of Sept. 4:
Students will study homonyms and idioms. Students will also be introduced to the book that will be used for a group book report-Tangerine.

Test on Friday covering prefixes, suffixes, root words, synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, analogies, homonyms, and idioms.

Week of Aug. 27:
Students will study prefixes, suffixes, root words, synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, and analogies.

If students have an excused absence they should select an article from the first section of the newspaper with at least 25 paragraphs and write a summary of the article (at least 30 sentences) and their reaction or opinion (5 sentences). Students must also complete the main idea graphic organizer supplied by the teacher. The article, summary, and graphic organizer should be stapled together with student’s name, period and date of absence. Students have 3 school days from their date of absence to turn in this assignment.

Week of Aug. 20 - Aug. 24:
