    1 three-ring binder (hard cover 1” to 2”)
    1 Pkg. dividers (five sections)
    1 Pkg. notebook paper
    2 pens (blue or black)
    1 ream Xerox paper

Subject Content:
We will cover the five components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, needed to produce a successful reader.

Phonemic awareness means becoming aware of the different blended sounds of the English language.
Phonics is matching sounds to the letters of our alphabet.
Fluency refers to the ease and flow of the reader when reading a passage.
Comprehension is that the reader understands what was read.

We will also cover the Sunshine State Standards pertaining to reading.

Class Goal:
To provide you with the tools and strategies to become a more successful reader.  To help prepare you for the FCAT.

                     Policies/Procedures
Grading:

Vocabulary Quizzes    20%  Vocabulary will be given out on Monday and tested on Friday.

Daily Activities    20%  Quizzes, topics I have read to you in class, group assignments.

Daily Participation    20%  Being involved in class.  Active, alert, making eye contact.  Answering questions.

Reading Journals    20%  Making entries with substance and relevance.  Each entry needs to be at a
minimum 1 page.

FCAT practice tests     20%   Are you paying attention?  PArticipating during class discussion of FCAT topics and questions.

           When Hemmingway befriended Thomson, he made friends with him.

           Most new houses are modernized to fit the new buyers.

           I had to console the disheartened students when they failed the FCAT test.

I had to fight through the throng of people in line to get my hand stamped.
            2) stringent- strict or tough
To graduate from the Police academy you have to go through stringent exercises and instruction.
            3) introspective-thoughtful
A minister is considered an introspective person because he thinks deeply about others and the Bible.

The Mississippi river has several lakes that serve as it tributaries.

I could tell the bananas were ripe because their colors changed from green to yellow.
        2) dainty- delicate, small and beautiful.
The dainty porcelain platter may break if you drop it.
        3) apparatus- another name for a machine or piece of equipment.
Carrier invented the apparatus now known as an air conditioner.

The swing gently swayed back and forth.

Chameleons change color according to temperature, mood, or to communicate.
        2) transparent-see through
I like to use transparent tape so no one can see how I made it come together.
        3) habitat-where an animal or persons live.
Animals thrive in their natural habitat.

The decaying tree will probably fall over if a storm blows through.

           3.  discrepancy- inconsistency.  Something is not adding up to the facts
The police will find out if there are any discrepancy in your alibi because they will investigate.
4. strenuous- hard labor.  Not easy to do do
