Hello, I am Coach Leitner, your daughter's Physical Education teacher. I have been an educator for 28 years, all here at Lakeland Highlands. I also coach our varsity volleyball team.
We, the coaches here at LHMS, run an excellent P.E. program, and we expect alot from our students. First, we expect the kids to dress out and participate all period, every day. Dressing and playing make up most of their grade. We do a variety of team sports and large-group activities, and we work on fitness daily (running, stretching, push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups). At some point during the year, your child will run a mile for a grade. If she makes an effort every day in class, this will not be a difficult task for her to accomplish. The state mandated Health lessons are also taught through our P.E., Reading, and Critical Thinking classes.
It is very important to get your Physical Education supplies as quickly as possible. The students are expected to wear the proper uniform and footwear, and they need a "Master" brand combination lock for their lockers. If you need assistance, we have a very specific alternative to our P.E. uniform, as well as clean used uniforms and locks. Let your coach know if you need assistance with any of these items.
When absent, the girls are expected to do written work as their make-up assignment, just as they would in any other class. The work is due 2 class days after their return to school. The girls were given a paper during the first week of school outlining the details of this assignment, and this information is also posted in the locker room. Essentially, the students write a handwritten, one-page, RESEARCHED report for every day absent, usually on a sport, athlete, or health issue.
Good behavior and sportsmanship are very important to keep our classes running smoothly, especially in the locker room. Loud, wild, unlady-like behavior will not be tolerated. Unfortunately, our P.E. classes are mixed by grade this year, but we haven't had any real problems yet between the 8th and 6th graders. However, the 6th graders have had to move along faster than usual so as to not slow down the 7th and 8th graders. All in all, it has worked out better than expected and, although our classes are very large, we're doing O.K.
