There are 3 goals for this class -
        1.  to improve reading skills
        2.  to prepare for the FCAT
        3.  to improve grades in other                      
            classes through improvement in the students'  
            reading abilities

Intensive Reading – Read 180 – Course Syllabus

Course Description – Intensive Reading includes Reading, writing, and listening activities throughout the students’ learning experiences.  Learning tasks and materials support the individual needs of students.  Critical thinking, problem solving and test-taking skills and strategies will be included in the curriculum.  Students will rotate to 3 different areas each day:  Silent Reading, Computers and Small Group work with the teacher and individually.  This course will be used only for elective credit, but is required for any student who has earned a level 1 or 2 on their last FCAT Reading test.  

Reading Strategies to be taught: Activating Background knowledge, Predicting, Questioning, Text Structure, Setting a purpose for reading, Using Context Clues, Making Connections, Visualization, Making inferences and Summarizing.

Reading Comprehension Skills:  Main Idea and Details, Drawing Conclusions, Comparison and Contrast, Cause and Effect, Author’s purpose, Persuasive Appeal, Elements of Plot, Gathering, Analyzing and Evaluating Information, Text Organization, Graphic Organizers, Point of View, Summary, Inference, Propaganda Techniques,  Strong Versus Weak Arguments, Relevant and Irrelevant Text, Generalizations, Understanding Poetry, Validity and Accuracy, Literary genre, Figurative Language, Research, SQ3R and Irony.  
Vocabulary Strategies taught:  How well do I know words, Word maps, and Word Walls.  

Weekly Activities:  Fluency Practice, Think Alouds, Sustained Silent Reading,  Daily Rotation through Read 180 computer programs, Word Attack, Vocabulary Skills and weekly Comprehension Strategies.  

Materials Used:  Read 180 Computer program, Selected stories, R Workbooks and articles designed to teach the various skills.  

Assessments:  FCAT, Scholastic Reading Inventory, teacher made

Florida Reading Formula: 5 + 3 + ii + iii =  
•    five essential components of reading instruction (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension
•    3 types of classroom assessments (screening, diagnosis, progress monitoring)
•    Initial Instruction (including explicit, coordinated, aligned, whole class instruction, flexible small groups organized by needs; sufficient practice opportunities; print-rich environment; and ESOL strategies)
•    Immediate Intensive intervention (screening, diagnosis, prescription, remediation, progress monitoring, continueing support, etc.)

2nd period -  8:10 -  9:00 -  Intensive Reading 9th grade
3rd period -  9:06 -  9:56 -  Planning
4th period - 10:02 - 10:52 -  Intensive Reading 9th grade
5th period - 10:58 - 12:20 -  Intensive Reading 9th grade
6th period - 12:25 -  1:16 -  Intensive Reading 9th grade
7th period -  1:22 -  2:12 -  Intensive Reading 9th grade

Supplies needed for Reading
*Lots of paper
*Pencils
* one binder/notebook
1st/2ne period - a box of tissues
4th/5th period - a roll of paper towels
6th/7th period - a bottle of hand sanitizer

Nightly homework for all Reading classes - Your child should be reading a book or magazine of their choice every night for 30 minutes or more. Grades will be posted for parents only of their student to view on a special website -Parent Internet Viewer.  You will be able to see every grade posted for your child.  Come to the school Guidance office to register for an account.  Students should also log onto the FCAT Explorer website for additional practice at home. Log onto FCATEXPLORER.com.  Your child's sign in name is their last name and first initial - no spaces.  The password is the number 53 then the first 4 letters of the student's last name and birthday in 4 digits, 2 for month and 2 for date (Sept. 19 would be 0919).

  • FCAT Explorer Great for FCAT practice - Your child's last name and first initial will be their screen name. The month and day (4 digits) of his/her birthdate will be the password. The site is free if you have internet access. Students who do not have internet access may use the computers in the media center after school.
