PIANO KEYBOARDING CLASS – Beginning level class

OBJECTIVE:

    The keyboard lab is designed to offer students with little or no music background an opportunity to learn about music through the use of the piano.
    Students will learn about basic music terms, notation, listening, and how all of these apply to the piano keyboard.  Great emphasis will be placed on the mastery of classical music compositions.
    Students will have the opportunity to explore their individual music talents through hands-on classroom experiences.

Week 1 - Music terminology, music history, basic rhythm units, introduction to the keyboard

Week 2 - Music terminology, names of lines and spaces, rhythmic notation, prereading exercises

Week 3 - Rhythm notation, names of lines and spaces, simple one hand melodies, computer theory programs

Week 4-10 Rhythm, more complex melodies using two hands
dynamic properties, articulations, sightreading, computer enhanced theory programs, daily exercise

Week 11-13 - Song writing using software on computer specially designed for beginning song writers.  Students will arrange traditional melodies and compose original selections using melodies and chords, daily exercise

Week 14-16 - More complex songs, rhythms, performance techniques, musical history of western culture

Week 17-18 - Performances, reviews, testing.

POLICIES

1.    Respect the rights of others and not interfere with their  right to learn
2.    Understand that you will be held financially responsible for any damage caused by you.
3.    Understand that all school rules will be adhered to each day.

MAKE-UP POLICY:

    You will be given the same number of days to make up your work as you were absent.  Once you go over 6 total days of absences you will need to take a note to the attendance office to receive your make-up work. (Code of Conduct policy.)

TARDY POLICY”:

    Once the last bell rings the door will be locked.  You will then proceed to tardy hall or the HUT for the entire period.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES:

1.    You are to be in your seat before the bell rings and to remain there until dismissed by teacher.
2.    Book bags are to be left at the front of the room.  They are not to be taken to your station.  Take paper and pencil with you to your station.
3.    Headphones should be placed on the bookstand at the end of the period, pianos are to be turned off, and benches are to be placed under desks.

GRADING:

    Students will be evaluated according to the level of ability shown as an individual.  Testing will be done to show improvement made on specific skills.  Emphasis will be greatly placed on the level of actual participation each and every day.  If the student does not participate daily they will lose valuable daily participation points and thus the grade will be lowered.  Grades will be based upon total points accumulated.  Participation points, when taken, will be worth 5 points.

PROJECTS:

    On the last Friday of each month, projects for extra points may be played.  The music chosen will be from the supplementary Solo Repertoire Section of the Keyboard book starting on page 325.  Teacher approval must be obtained for each particular project choice so that the difficulty level of selected music does not exceed skill level of student.  These selections will not be covered in class.

EXTRA CREDIT:

    Extra credit will be available throughout the semester.  To receive extra credit, the student must do one of the following;
1.    Play a song from standard literature (unsimplified).  Teacher will help with selection.
2.    Play a piece of sheet music (current music written as a piano solo).  Must be approved by teacher.
3.    Write an original composition to be played by the student.  The composition must be fully written out, original, legible, at least 16 measures in length, use at least 3 chords in left hand (preferably I, IV, V7), and left hand in a rhythm other than a block chord arrangement.
4.    Write a paper about a famous composer or musical time period.  Teacher will supply list for choices.  The paper must be typed in proper form, 2 full pages in length, and include 4 references.

PIANO KEYBOARD II CLASS

Objective:

    The Keyboard lab is designed to offer students with elementary keyboard experience and background (should have passed Piano I) an opportunity to further the study of the keyboard and literature.
    Students will learn more about music theory, terminology, and technique as applied to the keyboard.  Great emphasis will be placed on Classical literature and technique.
    Students will have the opportunity to extend their piano abilities through hands-on classroom experience and instruction.

Entire semester:  Students will be given a list of repertoire pieces from which they will chose 15 to accomplish in the course of the semester.  All 12 major scales and their arpeggios will be studied (one per week), the performance techniques will be stressed.

Policies:
