Welcome back and Happy New Year to All!!  Let's get the New Year off to a great start.

Students,

Be sure to attend all classes prepared, follow all directions, and record all homework assignments.  If you have any new teachers this semester that you did not have last semester be sure to let me know.  Remediation will be available for all special education students along with individualized instruction and assistance.  We will also continue our resource program this semester.  See me for your scheduled times.

Work Hard and Stay on top of things.

G. O'Gwin

Parents,

As most of you already know, I pull students to the resource room for supplemental activities.  I also assist students in the general education classrooms.  Since my schedule is driven by where students are and what assistance is needed, my schedule varies from day to day.  If you need to see me please call and make an appointment.  I will do my best to meet with you at the earliest date and time possible.

Homework:  since the work I assist my students with comes directly from the lessons in the general education classroom, your child's homework will be assigned by their general education teacher (please see those teacher's homework page for assignments).

2006-07 INCLUSION GUIDELINES For The Varioius Diploma Options and general education classroom settings.

Listed below are some explanations concerning disabilities, accommodations, modifications, diploma options, and requirements for each.  I have also included some information concerning classroom testing and organization.

Accommodations in the general classroom setting:  changes are made in the way that material, instruction, testing etc. is presented that enable the student to have a better chance for success.  There is no change to the curriculum.

Example:  reducing the number of items on daily work or tests.

Modifications:  a change in the curriculum.
Example:  a student may be required to be engaged in basic math skills while the remainder of the class is doing algebraic equations.

* AHSD:  Students enrolled on the Alabama High School Standard Diploma (AHSD) may receive accommodations but no modifications.  They are required to pass the graduation exam.

* AOD:  Students enrolled on the Alabama Occupational Diploma (AOD) are not required to pass the graduation exam.  They will participate but are not required to pass.  Therefore, we want them to receive the instruction that will help them pass the exam but are not held accountable if they pass the class but do not pass the exam.  Modifications and accommodations for these students are acceptable and encouraged.  If a student on the AOD passes all sections of the graduation exam except the area for which they qualified for special services, they can receive the Alabama High School Standard Diploma.

* Graduation Certificate:  Students who are enrolled in the graduation certificate program will not participate in the exit exam.  They are however required to be enrolled in the core curriculum subjects.  Modifications to the curriculum and accommodations will be provided.

*  IEP Participation:  Diploma choices are made in the Spring IEP meeting at the end of the eighth grade.

* Since a choice of diploma option is not required for 7th and 8th graders, our goal is have each student attempt grade level assignments.  Accommodations and modifications are made in accordance with each student's Individualized Education Plan.

* Organizational Skills:  Students with disabilities often have little or no organizational skills.  I believe that an improvement in these skills would have a direct affect on their performance. As teachers and parents, we all need to do everything we can to assist our students with developing good organizational skills.
