My name is Lee Hasting and I teach 8th grade Advanced Physical Science and 8th Grade Science. I earned a bachelor's degree from Middle Tennessee State University in 1989 and a master's degree from the University of North Alabama in 2003. This is my 10th year teaching at Brookhaven Middle School.
I plan to use this webpage to keep you informed of assignments and events in my classroom. We participate in AMSTI (Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Intiative), which provides us with materials for a wide variety of hands on lab activities. We will have a wide variety of projects which will include several computer projects. Students should be able to complete all computer projects at school. We also address current science issues through the use of Science World Magazines. Brookhaven is an ARI school (Alabama Reading Initiative) and reading strategies are incorporated in science classes as well as all subjects. You will find that there is not a great deal of homework involved in my class. I stress and emphasize reading, language arts and math as the areas that all middle school students need to direct their main focus. This is the foundation that will serve them well in the future. Consequently, math and reading are heavily integrated into my curriculum.
Upcoming projects:
1. Invention Mini-project: Students will create an advertisement for an imaginary unique invention. They will include price, contact information, what their product is guaranteed to do, as well as a drawing of their product. Color should be used. (50 points)
2. PowerPoint project: Students will use research skill to search the internet for information about a topic of their choosing from a list of 8th grade science topics. They will collect information which they will then use to create a Microsoft PowerPoint multimedia presentation. Students will gain skills needed to use PowerPoint in future projects. (200 points)
