•    The students will receive globes and Catastrophic Events World Map. The students will discuss how they are alike and how they are different, and will record ideas on a venn-diagram.
•    The students will create a “What I Want to Know” section in their notebooks about catastrophic events. They will share these ideas.
•    The students will read How Scientists Study the Earth pages 6-7 and Views from Space pages 8-11.
Homework: The students will describe one catastrophic event they think might be best monitored by a satellite and explain why (paragraph).

Friday – September 12

Periods 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th
•    The students will complete Warm-up #13.
•    Students will use multicolored dots to represent different types of catastrophic events on the maps.
•    The students will complete World Map Pre-Module Assessment sheet p.12b.
•    The students will answer the following questions.
1.    Are any of the catastrophic events that you listed in your notebook or recorded on your world map related to each other in any way? If so, how?
2.    Do any of theses events help change the way the earth looks over time? If so, which ones? Why do you think this is?
3.    What information do you think can be learned about the earth by studying catastrophic events?
4.    How do you think catastrophic events affect people?

•    The students will make a hypothesis by guessing how many drops of water can be placed on the surface of a penny. The students will record their guesses.
•    The students will drop water onto a penny and will count each drop of water until one drop finally breaks the tension and the water spills over.
•    The students will record observations and state conclusions.
•    The students will complete Scientific Method sheet.
