This week we will prepare for our "Blast from the Past" party and continue working on the 50's chapter.
We've been discussing the fashion of the 50's and 60's.
Thursday is our big day and it will begin at 12:45. This should be a fun afternoon. Thanks to all the parents who have signed up to volunteer to send items and come and help with the party.
You should be getting a letter home on Monday about our end of the year field trip to B'ham. Please get your permission slip, medical release form and money in by the due date. There will be NO EXCEPTIONS!

April 14-18
We completed the Cold War Era and we will start with the 50's. Students have been given a letter to go home to inform you about our upcoming "Blast from the Past Party" on Thursday, April 24th. Please be looking for that letter and send it back so we can know how to organized for our party.
Students will be working on study notes for a test they will have next week on Chapter 28.
April 7- 11
We contiune to test this week and we will discuss the cold war. I will give an open book vocabulary test one day this week, just depending on which day I see your students.
March 31st-April 4th
It's TESTING WEEK! We will be working on testing skills and reviewing some history facts along with discussing government, economics, and civics. We will also begin on The Cold War - Chapter 27. Students will complete the video "The Hiding Place" With the schedule being different each testing day - classes will also be different as far as time of day and length of class.
If your child is here every day of testing and stays on task until completing their test they will be rewarded each day with free time outdoors. On Friday, April 4th we are going to have a picnic on the grounds. The cafeteria will have sack lunches that day and students will be able to eat outside and enjoy our very on D.J. Tyler Bevel (CRMS 7th grader). It should be a lot of fun and we hope a motivator for your child to be at school each day of testing and ready to work. We have other events planned for the next week of testing also.
Please read over the information that was sent home by your child about testing - also go over the helpful hints to make testing a success for you child.
March 24-28
I hope everyone had a great Spring Break and you are ready to get back in the swing of things at school.
Monday- Classes will view and hear about the projects that the TAG groups have been working on this semester.
Tuesday - We will finish up with sharing WWII projects and review the WWII test from Friday (14th) We will work on distinguishing fact from opinion
Wednesday - We will continue to review social studies skills, interpretering primary sources and civics. Begin watching "The Hiding Place" the story of Corrie Ten Boon.
Thursday - Working on more civics and economic along with interpreting illustrations of political cartoons.
Friday - Review the weeks warm ups and mini lessons for social studies skills. View "The Hiding Place".
March 10 - 14
This is going to be a busy and exciting week. We start a new and our last nine weeks for the school year.
On Monday and Tuesday we will have guest speakers from WWII. Each class will have a different speaker both days. On Monday we will also have some WWII uniforms, and other items during the 1940's.
Wednesday will be a review day for the WWII test, which will be on Friday. We will continue to view the Audi Murphy video about his part in WWII.
Thursday - Today the WWII projects/interviews are DUE! The project counts twice. We will share some of the projects today and continue tommorrow after the test and finish the week we get back from Spring Break.
Friday - WWII Test - this test counts two grades. Reports cards go home today. Remember next week is Spring Break. Rest up and come back ready to continue to prepare for the Stanford Test - March 31st - April 11th.
March 3-7
I've heard from many of the students who have already interviewed their 1940's person and some have been amazed to know that their great-grandparent knew so much. Remember the project is due March 13th.
This week we will continue with project updates to make sure everyone is on task. Guided readings 26-3 and 26-4 and reteaching will be turned in for a grade on Tuesday. STudents have been given their study guides for the WWII test and we have been taking notes to help with the study guide. We will be discussing battles that took place in North Africa, Italy and the Soviet Union. We will also read about and discuss the role the atomic bomb played in ending the war.
One more week and then we have Spring Break!!
February 25-29
Students have been given their instructions on their WWII projects, but just as a reminder:
Students will be required to:
1. Interview someone who lived in the 1940s. Students have the form of the questions they are to ask. If you do not have anyone you can interview I have a list of places PARENTS can call. (Great-grand parents, older church member, and elderly neighbors are great for interviews.)
2. A poster complete with pictures of the person interviewed. Please make copies of any old pictures, so they won't be damaged at school. You must attach the interview and a summary of the interview on the poster. The summary should include how you knew the person, anything that surprised you about the interview, and your feelings about the interview. This should be 3 -5 paragraphs.
3. Students will present their poster and tell us about the person they interviewed and explain what they have learned from this person about WWII.
4. Your name, class period, and date should be written on the back of your poster.
5. This project is due on Thursday, March 13th. This will count as two grades.
Student will be graded on contents of summary, interview, knowledge of person interviewed, following directions, creativity, neatness, and presentation.
Monday - We will work on comparing and contrasting for our skill building. Students will complete reteaching 26-1.
Tuesday - We will begin discussing section 2 in which European nations fell to Germany in 1939 and 1940. I will ask for project updates. Students will use a graphic organizer to recall important facts dealing with WWII.
Wednesday - We will discuss how the United States responded to the war in Europe and students will view headlines of those days. Students will receive their study guide for Chapter 26 WWII Test.
Thursday - Today's discussion will be on the Tuskegee Airmen and their role in WWII. Students will view some footage of the airmen and work on study sheets.
Friday - We will discuss what steps the US took in perparing to fight in the war. I will get a project update. These project updates are no more than me asking if they have found someone to interview and set a time to speak with their person. We will also continue with some video of the Tuskegee Airmen.
February 18-22

February 4 - 8
On Monday we will work on interpreting charts and tables to help us with our standarized test in the spring.
We will be discuss the Great Depression and how the depression affected the minority groups and why people criticized President Roosevelt and the New Deal. Students will be given their study guide mid week and we will begin to prepare for our test that will be next week.
Don't forget to go by the school office to pick up your child's new ID # and PIN# for STI.
January 28-February 1
This week we will work on charts for our standarized testing skill.
We begin the Great Depression - Chapter 25. Students will learn how the depression affected minority groups,
we will discuss the causes behind the stock market crash and how many Americans ended up in provety because of the depression. We will use a timeline and charts as we explore this era.
On Thursday we will be giving the Think Link test again. This test is a great tool for teachers to learn where they need to focus to help improve your childs skills.
January 21-25
Monday - MLK Day
Tuesday - We will complete and review guided reading 24-2. Students will read pages 709-712 and work on study guide 24-3, this will be homework if they do not finish. I will take it up for a grade on Wednesday.
Wednesday - We will go over the study sheet for Friday's test. Begin reading section 4 of chapter 24.
Thursday - complete guided reading 24-4 and review for Friday's test on chapter 24. The test will be multiple choice with three short answer questions.

Jan. 14-18
Monday we will work on reading maps on test to help with preparing students for our standarized test. Tuesday we will finish up WWI - Guided Reading 23-4 and 23-5 will be turned in for a grade. Wednesday thru Friday we will begin the Jazz Age (1919-1929) and be discussing the "Red Scare", Harding, radicalism and labor and racial unrest.
January 7-11
Welcome back to a new year. 2008 is going to be GREAT!! This week in Social Studies we will finish up WWI with post war events. On Mondays we will be working on skills, strategies, and helpful hints on take standardrized test. Don't forget to come by the school to get your password and instructions to be able to access your child's grades from home on your computer.
December 17-20
On Monday we will have guest speaker to talk to our class on "bullying" Mrs. Westbrook will be back in February to follow up on our "bullying" classes. Tuesday we will go over the Chapter 23 test we took on Friday. Wednesday and Thursday we will watch "Sgt. York". This is about the adult life of Alvin York from Tennessee and his time during WWI. I think the students will enjoy this movie.
December 10 -14 - This week we will finish section three of chapter 23 and stop there until after the holiday. Students will describe what was happening in Europe when the U.S. entered the war. They should be able to tell you the allied powers and central powers. We will study and review Wednesday and Thursday and Friday take a test on the first three sections of chapter 23.
Students were given a study guide Thursday, December 6th. We have been working on it a little everyday.
They have several dates to memorize and have been using index cards to study with. The test will be multiple choice with two discussion questions. Students have also been given the two discussion questions that will be on the test.
December 3rd- 7th - Students will work on identifing the countries that were involved in WWI on a map. We will talk about the reasons the U.S. entered WWI and explain the affects of the war to the American people. We will work on guided reading questions and cause and effect skill sheets. We will also discuss important dates and sequence them in order.
Students will learn the countries involved in the Triple Entente of 1914 and the Triple Alliance of 1914.
November 26-30 - This week we will finish chapter 22 and turn in all guided readings for a grade. There will not be a test on chapter 22. We will begin chapter 23 which begins our study of WWI.
November 19-23
We will finish section 3 and beging section 4 of chapter 22 on Monday. The students will be away on a field trip on Tuesday and then we are out the rest of the week for Thanksgiving break.
November 12-16
Sorry, folks for missing this week. I was gone to 4-H camp with 33 students and didn't get around to this site. The students worked on chapter 22 and completed the first three sections in that chapter.
November 5-9
We have begun Chapter 21, we will be discussing and reading about the progressive movement and the reforms. Women's right to vote and their role in the Progressive Era will also be discussed. Each day we will answer questions dealing with this era. Tuesday we will go to the gym for a Veteran's Day program. Monday Nov. 12th there will be no school in observance of Veteran's Day. Next week I will have a sub for three days as I will be taking a group of students to an environmental camp in Columbiana, AL. Then the 20th of November is our 6th grade field trip. All money is due this Friday the 9th.
October 29 - November 2
We will continue with chapter 20 by doing a graphic organizer on section three. We will also discuss how American spent their leisure time and complete guided reading 20-3. On Wednesday we will review for our test that will be Thursday. On Friday we will begin chapter 21.
October 22-26
Monday we will complete chapter 20 section 1 graphic organizer and begin guided reading 20-1. Students will work on key terms on page 582 in their text book.
Tuesday is Parenting Day and we will release students at noon. We will try to complete guided reading 20-1 and review it on Thursday.
Wednesday the students will read about how American cities grew and changed - pg. 590-595. We will begin on key terms pg 590 and guided reading 20-2
Thurday we will review sections one and two of chapter 20 and complete the guided readings. I will also give a warm up quiz on Thursday.
Friday students will copy a summary of chapter 20 that will serve as their study guide for the chapter 20 test.
October 15 - 19
I've had to change things around this week. As you know we didn't have our Chapter 19 test on Friday. We've had some schedule changes that have put us behind somewhat. Some of our changes have been because we've enjoy our first academic pep rally with the AHS drummers coming over to entertain us for all our hard work in school for the first 9 weeks. We've had a class meeting with Mr. Hastings discussing bullying. These events have kept us from moving as fast as I would like.
So saying all that, this week we will review on Monday for our chapter 19 test.
Tuesday, Mrs. Clarke, our counselor, will come and talk to the students in Social Studies about bullying.
Wednesday, we will have the Chapter 19 test.
Thursday and Friday - We will begin Chapter 20 - Toward an Urban America. This chapter is on immigration in the late 1800's. We will discuss famous writers from this time period, Angel Island and Ellis Island, Gilded Age, and settlement houses.
Two Reminders - Report Cards go out on the 19th of October and Parenting Day is October 23.
October 8-12
Don't forget we are out of school on October 8th and 9th for our fall holiday. Have a great long weekend.
We will review section 3 and 4 of chapter 19. We will review the study guide also.

October 1-5
On Monday and Tuesday we will be working in the computer lab on a mini project with a partner. The students will be researching an inventor and their inventions.
We will continue to add to our Chapter 19 foldables which contains test material.
Big business is our discussion for Wednesday, it's section 3 of chapter 19. Students will also be given their study guide for chapter 19 on Wednesday.
Thursday we will review for our test and share our inventors and their inventions
The last states test will be Friday - the North Middle States. There are 12 states this week.
Remember October 8th and 9th are fall holidays and no school. Have a great long weekend.
Sept. 24-28
We have finished the Western Movement and most everyone did a super job on their test and discussion question for extra credit. Friday's states was also another good grade for most students. Keep up the good work.
We will have seven states this week and your student got their new states (Northwestern with Hawaii and Alaska). Friday, Sept. 21st.
We will begin this week with a new chapter The Growth of Industry in which we will be studying the railroads, inventors, big business and industrial workers.
We will read in class and work on some graphic organizers to help us study and learn about this chapter. After our test on Friday we will go to the computer lab to research an inventor of this time period.
Sept17-21
On Friday, August14th- Just a heads up! We watched parts of "John Wayne and the Cowboys" so I could show the students a cattle drive and how cowboys brand cattle, herding cattle and roping. We watch what a long drive would look like. Some of them really liked the movie and probably will want to rent or buy it. I would suggest you watch the movie before letting them see it on their own.
For next week we will continue with chapter 18 and have our chapter test on Thursday. They all recieved a study guide on Wednesday and we went over the answers on Thursday and Friday. If they study the study guide they should do very well on the test. It will be a multiple choice test with one essay question. We will also have another states test on Friday the 21st. There are only four states this week. Again, they are to be able to spell the states, locate them on the map and match the state to the capital.
Sept. 10-14
Monday - Students will review the southern middle states for their test on Friday. We will finish defining the key terms from section 2 of chapter 18.
Tuesday - Beging section 3 of chapter 18. We will read and discuss this section. Students will work on the guided reading questions and define the key terms.
Wednesday - Review the guided reading questions for 18-3. and being section 4 of chapter 18. I will pass out a study guide for the test they will have next week on chapter 18. If you know the answers to the questions on the study guide you should do very well on the test.
We will review for the states test on Friday.
Thursday - Review for states test and work on section 4 of chapter 18 guided questions. Define key terms for section 4.
Friday - Southern middle states test. I will show a video of cattle ranching and branding of cattle. We will also view a long drive. I will use parts of "The Cowboys" to show these things.
Sept. 4-7
Monday - Labor Day - No School
Tuesday - We will being with our books this week. We will start with chapter 18 the western movement. I will introduce the unit with a game where we see what the students already know about the subject and then at the end of the chapter we will play the game again and see we what we've learned. We will also review our test from Friday - which I don't think many studied-
Students will work on defining the key terms from the first section of the chapter.
Wednesday - We will review for Friday's test of the S.E. states and their capitals. Remember you must be able to spell each state/locate the state on the U.S. map (using the abbreviations) and match the captial to the state. Student will read section 1 of chapter 18 and answer questions.
Thursday - Students will complete the guided reading questions from section one and begin on section 2.
Friday - We will create a foldable to help with studying the sections from our chapter. State Test on the S.E. states is today. Please remember you must be able to spell the state, know it's abbreviation, and match the state to it's capital.
August 27-31
Monday, 27th- Students who are part of the TAG program will work with Mrs. Pruitt during their Social Studies period on Mondays. We will continue to work on map skills in class. The students are finishing a packet of skills including time zones, reading a political map, population map, economic map, and weather map.
Tuesday, 28th - We will review the map skills as a class and review for our test on Friday. Remember the students were given the N.E. states for their test on Friday last Friday (8-24) They will have to know how to spell the states, locate the states on a map, and match their capital.
Wednesday, 29th - We work on longitude and latitude. Students will also learn interesting facts about the 50 states through a skill sheet.
Thursday, 30th - We will take a map review quiz and review for the test on Friday.
Friday, 31st - States and capitals test.
August 20 -24 -
Last Friday students completed a map of the seven continents, labeled the four oceans, equator and prime meridian. They will have a test on this material Friday the 24th of August. We will study some in class but this will be homework for the week.
Students will begin studing longitude, latitude, parts of a map and continue to work on the cardinal and intermmediate directions.
On Friday we will begin our states and capitals review. Each week the students will be given a region of the U.S. and be expected to know the capital, locate the state on a map and be able to spell the state correctly. We will follow this same procedure for about 6-7 weeks.
August 13-17 - This week we will be organizing our binders using the tabs. There will be a tab for: warm ups, grade sheets, vocabulary and classwork.
Students will finish their self portrait and do a pretest of the 50 states.
We will begin our warm ups this week on geography. There will be a scavager hunt to learn about our textbook and textbooks will be assigned to take home. Discussion on maps, how to read a map, map parts and the four types of maps will also be a part of our learning this week.
Students will bring home a syllabus to be signed by their parent.
August 9th and 10th - Welcome to 6th grade. I hope these first two days will be informative and put you at ease about middle school.
On Thursday we will stay in homeroom for most of the day and then meet in large groups to go over the classroom management and other procedures here at CRMS. You will change classes for 5th period so you can go to lunch with your lunch class. You will also go to P.E. and either band, chorus or reading and review.
Friday - Today students will change to each class meet all of their teachers and learn about what will be taking place in that class for the school year. We will talk about the planner and how to use it in each class and other classroom procedures per teacher.
