WEATHER RELATED EMERGENCY CLOSING PROCEDURES - PARENT INFORMATION

(1) FCA closes with Athens CITY schools for weather related emergencies,
such as icy roads, snow, flooding, etc. We do not follow Limestone County Schools.
If Athens City schools close, we will also close, at least on the first day
of an emergency.

(2) For most weather related activities, it is not necessary to close schools.
For example, we do not normally close for tornado watches or warnings. We have
emergency procedures that we follow strictly for these type of situations.
If you want to pick up your child during a severe weather warning,
that is your decision.

(3) It is not necessary to call the school to inform us that a
tornado or thunderstorm warning/watch has been issued. We carefully
monitor weather conditions through multiple sources, including:
NOAA weather radio (with alarm system)
EMA direct radio link - Emergency Management Agcy
    The Weather Channel
Direct Conferences with Limestone EMA officials

Generally, we get severe weather alerts before they are broadcast on TV.
In an emergency, we are too busy following emergency procedures to answer
the phone.

Please see our separate policy on Nuclear Related Emergency procedures
which would be initiated for an emergency at the Browns Ferry Nuclear
Plant (also available on this page).

FAITH CHRISTIAN ACADEMY
SCHOOL EMERGENCY & EVACUATION PLANS
for Nuclear Emergency only

In cooperation with the Limestone County Emergency Management Agency (EMA),
Faith Christian Academy has a plan to evacuate students in the event
of a serious emergency at the Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant. This
same plan would affect all schools with a 10 mile radius of the plant,
as we understand it. We want you to know what these plans call for.
THERE MIGHT NOT BE TIME TO CONTACT EACH PARENT IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY
DUE TO THE SWIFT RESPONSE REQUIRED. PLEASE REVIEW THESE PLANS NOW AND KEEP
THEM HANDY FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. These specific plans apply ONLY to Browns Ferry
related nuclear emergencies,
not weather related or other emergencies, which may call for entirely
different procedures.
There are (3) responses possible, based on the nature and severity
of the emergency:
A. EARLY RELEASE. If there is time for an early release, the principal
will order all students to be released early. Local radio/TV stations will
direct parents to pick up children at the school. After a sufficient amount
of time, children remaining at the school may be transported to
CEDAR HILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN ARDMORE, which is the designated
emergency shelter. (Time frame will depend on the situation and
nature of the emergency). Vehicles transporting students will be
escorted in front and back by official law enforcement. Children
will remain at the emergency shelter (Cedar Hill School) until parents
pick them up. (If no one is at FCA, check the Cedar Hill School Ardmore
following notification of an emergency involving the nuclear plant).
Students will only be released to persons on record as authorized to
pick them up. Therefore, it is imperative that your "authorized pick up"
list at school be current and complete. We cannot call parents during
an emergency to get permission to release chidden to unauthorized
persons. Please review your list of "authorized
up" persons now.
B. EVACUATION: If an emergency occurs that does not allow time for
early release, students will be transported immediately to CEDAR HILL
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN ARDMORE. Vehicles transporting students will be
escorted in front and rear by an official law enforcement vehicle.
Children will be held at CEDAR HILL SCHOOL until picked up by the
parents or by someone previously authorized to pick them up.
Parents, please be sure your "authorized pick up" list is current.
We cannot call you.
C. IN-PLACE-SHELTER: In certain potential hazards, the school may
keep students in place (at FCA) where they remain inside with all doors,
windows and outside air intakes closed. This may be a temporary situation
which leads to one of the actions above (A or B) later. (In-Place Shelter
is preferred if evacuation would result in transporting students through
an area that may be contaminated).
Parents should listen to Athens radio stations for information
regarding any emergency situation. Faith Christian Academy will
attempt to have information such as evacuation, early release, etc.
announced over local radio so parents may be informed. Local stations include:
WKAC 1080 AM (Daytime only - broadcasts sunrise to sunset)
WVNN - 770 AM (24 hours but may not be picked up at long distances)
WDRM (FM 102.1) Decatur (24 hours)
WZYP (104.3 FM) 24 hours
FM 93.3 or WUMP AM 730 may also make announcements
In an emergency, it is likely that either the phones will be out
of order or personnel will be too busy dealing with the emergency
to answer calls. Radio stations may be your best source for information.
Since phone communication with parents may be impossible, we cannot
emphasize enough how important it is that you review your list of who
can pick up your children, and be sure anyone who might need to make
a pick up during an emergency has written authorization on file NOW
at the school office. This information sheet refers to a nuclear
emergency at Browns Ferry ONLY; not to weather related problems.
