Dear Parents

Governor Riley is going to be visiting the school on Wednesday, Oct. 15 along with the National Secretary of Transportation.  We are asking them to wear their school shirt, or dress very nicely.  They will need to be on their best behavior.  They need to listen to all directions in class.

Field Trip information was sent home on last week.  The permission form and the money are due on Oct. 17.  NO siblings can go on the field trip that are not in 3rd grade.

Each child needs to be at school each day unless they are sick.  We introduce and cover a large amount of material in a day.  They do not get everything we are doing when they miss the instructions.  The students also need to behave themselves at school.  We need an environment where all students can learn.

Progress reports came home today.  Please sign and return.  They will have more science grades with these.

Book Fair—The book fair will be from Fri., Oct. 24 to Fri, Oct 31.  They will have a day to go to the library to purchase books.  Ms. Myles will send home an order form.  They will not go to the book fair every day; they will have an assigned time to come and a make-up time.

November will be parental involvement month.  MORE information will come home about this later.
Thursday and Friday will be class picture day.  They will have information about this.
Halloween Parties will be on Oct. 31.  They have a sheet in today’s folder about what they need to bring for the party.  The party will start at 1:30.  They can dress up that day but it must be something that they can go to the restroom without help and that will not interfere with their work.  No paint!

Fall Festival will be from 5-8 on Tuesday Oct. 28, at school.  I will have Sucker Pull and Bead Draw.

Yearbooks will be on sale until November 7.  They are $30.00 dollars.

Science--They will have a test on Chapter 12 on Thursday.  They will need to return the study sheet each day and have it signed.  Next week they will go to Social Studies.  We will work on Chemical test when they return.  This will be hands on activities, using the book, and also recording results of their activities.  Some papers will not come home because they will be in their science journals, but I will send home their grades on the work.

Miss McCord

They are working on Things That Come in a Group, They will also be subtracting with renaming, Chapter 5.   They had a test on this today.  They will also work on Chapter 6  money and 7 time.  They have homework every night.  This needs to be returned the next day.  We go over ALL work in class.

They have homework each night except Friday.

They need to start learning the multiplication facts. They had their 1st speed test (1/2 sheet) last week.  They will continue to have these.  They need to study the 3’s and 4’s also.
They will be having speed test on the facts assigned to learn.  The 0’s, 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s can be learned very easily.

We cover a lot of material in a day.  They need to listen in class.  The classroom needs to be a place where all students can learn.  Some are talking during instructions.

Reading— They are working on the Story Purdy’s Problem.   They will have homework on each story.  ON Monday of each week they will have a workbook sheet FAMILY TIMES that has what they are studying, vocabulary words—meanings of words, spelling list, etc.  They need to go over this at home. Please read the story we are working on each Monday-Wednesday night at home.  It is very important that they read this story aloud to you.  On some nights you can read to them, they can read one page and you read another, they can read it silently to themselves, but they need to read one night aloud.
They are taking an AR test on each story.  All students need to be reading AR books and taking test.  Their goal is 5 points for this six weeks.
On A Work Day most made much better grades, keep up the good work.

Go over vocabulary words, which are #1-7 on the test.  The tests has questions on author’s purpose, the lesson learned from the story, maybe one on another title for the story, something that will most likely happen next, or why it happened, characters actions, sequencing,  and questions that relate to the comprehension of the story.  These are # 8-17.  Then the last 3 (# 18-20) are discussion question.  These can be on retelling the story, using contents clues, summarizing, and making inferences on the main idea.  They can use their book during the test but if they do not know the story, this can make the test even more difficult.  I put the page numbers on the board.
SOME ARE REALLY HAVING A PROBLEM PAYING ATTENTION IN CLASS AND TO INSTRUCTIONS.  THEY WILL KNOW SO MUCH MORE IF THEY LISTEN IN CLASS.

Language— They are working on single and plural nouns.   (Rules on how to turn a single noun into a plural noun----  1.  Most nouns are made plural by adding s.  2.  Nouns that end in ss, s, x, ch, and sh are made plural by adding es.  3.  Nouns that end in consonant y, change the y to i and add es.  4. Some nouns are made plural by changing the spelling of the noun.)They are also working on special nouns whose spelling changes from a single noun to a plural noun. Ex. Mouse—mice, ox—oxen, child—children, etc.

Spelling—They are given the spelling list each 6 week. They will have week 3 words next Friday.   They will have the challenge words as bonus points.  They were given 2 spelling list—one for home and one to leave in their homework folder.  They need one of their spelling lists at school.  They will have a pretest on Tuesday and if they do not make 100 they will take the test again on Friday.   If they make 100 on Tuesday’s test (this will be without the bonus points), they will have free time during the spelling test. They will have their test to be signed on Thursday night (test taken on Tues.) and returned to school on Friday.  Signing their test is a homework grade.  They will write their words on Monday. We are not starting these in class now.

They have homework every night except on Friday.
