General Information:
Our classroom is currently made up of students in grades 1-6.  Each student is working towards his or her individual IEP goals.  Most of our students are working towards Alabama's Extended Standards.  These standards cover Reading, Math, and Science.  They consist of skills taken from the regular Alabama Course of Study that have been simplified at 4 different levels for students that are unable to progress in the general curriculum.  We work on all reading standards throughout the school year.  We focus on one math and one science standard each 6-week grading period with some review.  Social Studies, Language, and other subject matter covered are based on each student's IEP and grade level and vary greatly.
We participate weekly in a newspaper designed especially for students with special needs called News-2-You.  It has many online and printed activities included, many of which cover our standards.
We also work daily on Occupational Therapy and Speech/Language goals in the classroom.

Reading Extended Standards: (level 3)

Grade 2-Students will isolate initial and final sounds in phonemic tasks, identify all single consonant and vowel sounds, use words that describe and represent real life objects and actions, identify first event in a story read aloud, and read high frequency words.

Grade 5- Students will identify words with more than one meaning, draw conclusions about characters based on their actions, and use a range of skills and strategies including phonetic skills to read unfamilliar and multisyllable words

Grade 6- Students will use strategies including interpretting characters' behaviors and distinguishing fiction from nonfiction, identify literary elements including main idea, and use strategies including locating information in informational and functional materials

5th 6-weeks Information:

All students have mastered their individual grade level standards in Reading, Math, and Science.  We will be reviewing reading skills listed above, basic math skills, and writing skills until the end of the year.  We will be doing theme based units for Science and Social Studies.  Themes for this grading period include:  The Human Body, Black History, Dr. Seuss, Rainbows (and weather), The Southeastern US, Easter and St.Patrick's Day activities.

Standards are presented here at level 3.  Our students are working a various levels, 1-4, based on their individual needs.

General Education Participation:

All students served in this classroom participate in general education classes with their grade level peers.  This participation includes, but is not limited to:  PE, lunch, science, and music classes.

Please feel free to visit our classroom and/or become a parent volunteer.
