Dear Parents,
Welcom to a new year at Pine Level Elementary School. I am delighted to have your child in my class this year. We can look forward to many exciting and rewarding experiences. here are some things I think you and your child should be aware of this year.
Students are sharpening their study skills of note-taking, comprehension, writing and problem solving in all subject areas this year we are excited to include AMSTI Math and Science kits for "hands on" exploration. These activities are sure to help prepare for the SAT 10/ARMT test in April.
************Absences**************************************************************************
If your child will not be at school due to illness, appointments, etc., please notify the school as soon as possible. Students will have two days for each absent day to make up their work and return a note concerning their absences.Lengthy vacations can be worked out before your child leaves or asked to make up their work after they return.
Makeup Work
In accordance with the Autauga County Code of Conduct the following makeup work guidelines will be used in my classroom. An individual makeup work
sheet is printed for each student for each day there is an absence and placed in the makeup work tray along with any handouts. It is the student's
responsibility to check this tray and obtain his/her makeup work upon return to school. Students need to see me to arrange a time to make up any tests
or quizzes that cannot be made up at home. Failure to turn in homework or makeup tests and/or quizzes will result in a zero. This can have a detrimental effecton a student's final grade. According to the Pine Level Handbook students have three days to complete makeup work. A delay in completing makeup work could place an undue hardship on the student.

What is a Conduct Documentation?
A documentation is record of a teacher finding it necessary to speak with your child individually about a misbehavior.
When a conduct documentation is made the student is asked to sign it, and the teacher has a one-on-one opportunity to counsel with the student.
Why do you use conduct documentations?
They provide an opportunity for one-on-one conferences with the students.
They provide concrete evidence to the student when the misbehavior is addressed.
They provide an opportunity for more detailed explanation of the improper conduct.
They provide a record for the students, parents, teachers, and administrators.
Conduct documentations will be reported in Tuesday folders as a conduct grade:
0 conduct documentation = S (NO marks in folder)
1 conduct documentation = S-
2-3 conduct documentations = N
More than 3 conduct documentations = U

*****1st Six Weeks******
1st Six Weeks Stories and Spelling Words:
We have a new reading series this year that will be used for reading, spelling, and language. If your child has me for reading he/she will also have spelling with me.
There will be some changes in literacy this year since we have the new reading series. We cover 1 story per week in the reading textbook. Comprehension and vocabulary quizzes are given on each story.
Grades are also given on the focus skills for basal stories. Spelling tests are given on Thursday.
The following stories will be covered the first six weeks.
Your child needs to practice math facts daily. You need sets of flash cards for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. A weekly test will be given on
basic math facts. We have a challenging schedule for the first six weeks in math that will require your child to have rapid recall of basic math facts.
Check the "Practice Probes" and "Math Links" pages for practice sites your child can use.
We will cover the following information the first six weeks.
Chapter 1--compare, order, round and expand whole numbers to millions
Chapter 2--compare, order, round and expand decimals to thousandths
Chapter 3--addition and subtraction of whole numbers and decimals (including word problems and addition properties)
Chapter 4--more addition and subtraction
Chapter 7--multiplication of whole numbers (including word problems and multiplication properties)
We will have four AMSTI units that will be completed this year. As part of these units, we will be doing many science activities in class. Students should find these activities and others engaging and exciting ways to learn science. I know that I am excited about the opportunity to teach using these activities. Appropriate behavior and following directions is a must for these activities.
When using the textbook, we will read and discuss a section of science each day. At the end of the section, students will complete the workbook page on the section discussed. Students may use their books on the exercises.
Workbook pages will be given at the end of each lesson.
Please encourage your child to read all chapters.
The science grade will come from these workbook pages, science activitiy grades, science notebook, quizzes, and tests.
Science notebooks will be a vital part of science this year. The notebooks will be graded on: complete table of contents, all entries complete, directions followed, organization, and neatness. It is the students' responsibility to maintain and keep up with these notebooks.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Workbook pages will be given at the end of each lesson.
Please encourage your child to read all chapters.
